How Stereotypes Offer With Intercultural Communication
Stereotypes interfere with intercultural communication by portraying separation in different cultures. Stereotyping can be a natural way of dealing with the unknown, but problems occur when failure to recognize negative stereotypes. Stereotypes is defined as a complex form of categorization that mentally organizes your experiences with, and guides your behavior toward, a particular group of people. This creates a cognitive structure containing perceived knowledge, beliefs, and expectancies about social groups. Stereotyping narrows our perception and leads to misperceptions becoming counterproductive with intercultural communication. Stereotyping hinders successful communication because of oversimplification, exaggeration, and overgeneralization.
