Social media tools and other technology provide a way to meet and stay in touch with other people through the Internet and it links millions of people together across the globe. The technology has significantly changed the way we think about identity. Unlike face-to-face, online interaction provides an opportunity for one to be anonymous, invisible, and multiple. Users have the opportunity to portray, experience, and express unexplored aspects of the self. With technology, you can also keep track of many things what is going on around you. You can read news from all around the world. The computer and Internet have affected our way of working, communicating, playing and also writing. There are tools like spelling and grammar checker, thesaurus and dictionary.
It takes less time to proofread a written document ans also you do not need to open a dictionary to look for meanings of words. It is also used in military too, which is a complete change for air force etc. However, there are also some disadvantages of technology. Constantly using internet shrinks your capacity to think. The easy access to information has made students lazy in terms of their education since they are able to find and download information without researching. They also use computers for mathematical tables and calculations without actually solving the problems. When I look at the wired world I am living in, I am wondering how people used to live at the time when computers and the Internet were not invented. Now I see that computers are used in every aspect of life. They make our lives easier, but also makes us lazier than we used to be. I can reach anything via the Internet without going out of my home, but it makes me stay away from the social world. For instance, my mom recently started calling me on the phone to tell me something from the other room in the same house. Then I started doing to same thing to her, either calling or texting or IM
her. I think technology is the slow death of society. I think it also affects my work habits in a bad way. I can never focus on my work more than 15 minutes. The next minute, I start checking my emails or Facebook and it is not even hard when you have a smart phone. It does not require you to type your email address and password which is very convenient. According to the movie ''Digital Nation'', many South Korean kids are addicted to video games and the Internet. They have the access to the Internet 24/7 in the internet cafes. They stay up all night on the computer to play those games, and they spend less time for their studies. Because they say that they like it better then studying. They do not know where to stop when start playing games and continue for 7-8 hours a day which I think is a waste of time.
Even though technology gives us an easier and more convenient life, we need to know our limits and should not hooked on it too much. We should also teach our kids not to overdo it so that they will have a balance and not get addicted to it. Otherwise, technology will have a bad effect in our lives.
