Fear is often used in advertising scare potential customers into buying their product promptly. It's a good method used to boost sales as well as improve a business's chance of becoming more popular. Fear advertisements are often the ones that catch the audience's eye in a memorable fashion. How ethical and effectively persuasive are these advertisements? Do people get turned off by being scared into buying a product? When the media uses fear in their headlines many accuse them of being attention grabbers. Some just have to attack a person's honor. Such a man having to defend his manhood in a beer commercial. The previous methods all show what reponse a person has to a threat on his life or well being. These ads threatens a person's power as an egotistical human. In response to this fear a person may for example decide to switch to miller lite beer. When the other two methods of fear fail to resonate with consumers and consumer efficacy is low a company might turn to putting the consumer on the defensive instead trying to make the consumer go on the offense. Once again a shaky method morally but a man must do what a man must do to defend his honor. Even if it is to spend on a product that in no way will increase his "manliness". When people see Axe commercials they see sex appeal, sexualization of women and feminists go nuts. What i see is an attack on a weak spot for men. They portray a highly unrealistic scenario of a man that most people can't live up to. Women see this commercial and think oh this man is a REAL man and won't be attracted to someone that doesn't use the product. Now as a man I think i have to buy this product or i'll strike out with women. I don't want to be alone just because i would by axe bodyspray. My defensive mechanism is now triggered where i have been challenged by crappy commercial A and B to defend by manliness. A glove slap to the face. My unrealistic hope is that by using the product i will become a man that millions of women will crave as if i were not attractive enough to be even walking the streets without this product. This both makes me self conscious as well as crave anything that will rid me of this negative fear and depression.
