How The World Was Made
Cheerokee, Retold by: James Mooney
“The earth is a great island floating in a sea of water”

Long time ago when everything was all water and suspended at the each of the four cardinal points by a cord hanging down holding the solid rock. When the earth grows old and dulls it’s strings will snap and the earth will sink down just to be water again. The Indians were afriad of that happening. There was all the animals above in the Gälûñ'lätï, the sky realm. They wanted more space and wondered what was below the water. The little water-beetle voluntered to seek what was below. He darted for every direction, but no firm place to rest. He went down under and gather mud, which ended up growing on every side until it because as to what we know call Earth. The animals were anxious to go down, they asked the birds to check if it wasn’t too wet and they said that it was still wet. Later, the Buzzard went down, he flew all other and got very tired and his wings began to strike the ground making what we call moutains and the animals thought there would only be mountains so they called the Buzzard to come back. As it dried, it grew dark so they got the sun and set in a track to go around everyday at a specific time. They took the sun, but it was really hot so they pushed it a little further until it was the right temperature for them to look around. Under this newly found earth was another – where plants grew and seasons were different. There were streams that came down the mountains. When the season would change the water grew warmer and warmer in the fall and in the winter things grew colder and colder. When the plants and animals were made they were told to watch and keep awake for several nights and only the owl, panther and one or two were given the power to see and to go about in the dark and made the prey of birds and animals to sleep at night. As for the trees, it was the ceder, pine, spruce, holly and the laurel who

    1. What was Earth like in its infancy? How does it compare with the Earth today? In the very beginning of earth's history, this planet was a giant, red hot, roiling, boiling sea of molten rock - a magma ocean. The heat had been generated by the repeated high speed collisions of much smaller bodies of space rocks that continually clumped together as they collided to form this planet. As the collisions tapered off the earth, it began to cool, forming a thin crust on its surface. As the cooling continued, water vapor began to escape and condense in the earth's early atmosphere. Clouds formed and storms raged, raining more and more water down on the primitive earth, cooling the surface further until it was flooded with water, forming the seas. Today the earth is full of life and water and rain there is no longer molten rocks flowing and there is no dangerous vapor in the clouds, today earth is life friendly.…

The story tells that the woman was rescued by the birds and that “The great sea turtle came and agreed to receive her on his back”(Iroquois 40). After the woman is placed on the turtle’s back, she wants to know if there is any soil for her to plant the roots that she was able to hold onto from the sky-world as she fell downward. None of the animals know where to find soil, but they suggest that there could possibly be some at the bottom of the ocean. After several animals unsuccessfully ventured to the bottom of the ocean, the muskrat is the only one able to gather some soil for the woman. Still on the turtle’s back, she “... took the tiny wad of dirt and placed it in the middle of the great sea turtle’s back. The the woman began to walk in a circle around it, moving in the direction the sun goes. The earth began to grow.” (Iroquois 40) Due to the fact that earth was produced, man was able to live in that…

A long time ago, before the first real humans ever existed, birds used to actually speak the animal language that all animals use to communicate. The race of birds lived peacefully among other animals speaking the same language. Birds lived as one race together but were separated by equal tribes. Each tribe had its own leader and these tribes lived in harmony together under their group of laws, which was called the pact of the birds. The pact of the birds included laws about behaving, how to act, and the most important rule, which was to never travel to the land of the Sea People. There was a bird by the name of Darius who despised these rules because he thought it was unfair to not be able to travel to the land of the Sea People. Darius was part of the group called The Elks, which was lead by the tribe leader Elkanson. So it all started when Darius broke the pact of the birds.…
