How To Avoid Racial Stereotypes
Isn’t movies and television show part of the media and is created by directors and writers? Well that is how I see it in my perspective that the movies and shows are part of the media. Media is a very broad word and could mean different things for everyone. Movies and shows stills conveys a powerful message that affects many people thus affects their perspective on that specific ethnicity. If writers and director do not have a social responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnic characters, then whose job is it to stop them? I do not see anyone stopping them since it is not illegal. Therefore this is why, I believe they should just take it upon themselves and try to avoid racial stereotypes for the greater good.

In movies, when you see a janitor or a cook in a restaurant, the person playing the part is usually a Latino. When we see a person playing a successful business person, they are usually male, and Caucasian. When we see a criminal playing a role in a movie, they are usually African-American or Latino. The movie, Boyz in the Hood (1991) is a perfect example. Our society’s main source of entertainment is the television. When we see a pattern in certain roles people play, we start to believe that this is the way things are in real life. I believe the media plays the most significant role in creating stereotypes.…

Firstly, Hollywood do have responsibility to avoid stereotyping ethnicity characters because it creates inequality. Although Hollywood produce great movies and have great actors let not forget that not always Hollywood gives equal opportunity to other ethnicity. For example in the YouTube video “Yellow Faces”, it is more than clear that Hollywood are not equal to different ethnicity. Avatar casting in Hollywood was producing Air bender casting it stated, “Caucasian or any other ethnicity” which it is clearly they are looking for whites not another ethnicity. If the Avatar script is written by Asians why Hollywood do not give an opportunity to Asians. It is not right to have all the actors white they should at least give the ethnicity a chance…

Hollywood is amongst the top in power of the media empire in the United States, the productions that come out, become believed representations of the audiences that watch them, bringing down many that are shown in those productions. With audiences that are more than majority a darker color, than what are represented in Hollywood films, it brings to attention just how much of a problem it comes be. Racial prejudice often occurs through first impressions; individuals often associate an individual’s external appearance with personality traits that can be tremendously inaccurate. To reduce problems of racial prejudice in society individuals need to alter their cognitive strategies that are causing them to briefly categorize people in particularly negative ways. Furthermore, children need to be taught as well about these negative cognitive strategies and how to avoid categorizing people. Witter, Hammer and Dunn express in in the textbook Adjust, that stereotypes are often automatic customs that occur unintentional and unconsciously. However, these automatic customs can be superseded, though it requires awareness from the individual that…

As a child, being black was never an anomaly for me. I was educated on the issues of white privilege and how black people are often targeted in a world riddled with injustice; my family on my mother’s side hailed from the deep south, so my grandparent’s lives were obviously filled with the turmoil of the racist south. While equality was always something on my mind, even as a child, being born (and raised for a semi-short while) in New York opened my eyes to the many cultures, religious, personalities, genders, and sexualities of the world. Despite this, the general heteronormative nature of the black community (and the bigotry that can spawn from it) worried me especially in a time where I was still learning about myself.…

I intend to argue a point in my research paper that race is not associated with biological features, but through consumerism it is constantly associated with them. I intend to research the typical stereotypes types associated with the Hispanic, Black, White, and Oriental races. My focuses in this research paper are the toy manufacturers of Barbie and American girl.…
