As ascertained by the New York Times, “The report said the border wall could cost nearly $70 billion to build and $150 million a year to maintain. An internal report by the Department of Homeland Security said the wall could cost about $21.6 billion, not including maintenance.” For an action that is presumptively going to fail, that’s quite a lot of money coming out of United States citizens’ pockets. Most Trump supporters mindlessly encouraged for the wall to be built for the sake of our president stating that Mexico will pay for all expenses. In a broadcast address, President Nieto told the country, “I’ve said time and again; Mexico won’t pay for any wall.” Even with the supposed Mexico import taxes that Trump has suggested in turn, he’s still going to make it mandatory for Americans to pay taxes towards the construction of the wall so construction can begin quickly. This is unfair, due to the fact that most United States citizens are not middle class, and are barely scraping by. Now, Trump, who didn’t even win the popular vote, is forcing Americans to pay for his wants. Moreover, the United States and Mexico depend on each other too greatly in terms of economics. Trump has pledged to construct a “big and beautiful” wall, but as a matter of fact, despite how beautiful and big it may be, it’s going to backfire due to how ineffective it is. Furthermore, illegal immigration can be solved even quicker, be more effective, and inexpensively with a market based immigration policy. Even with our current border fence, approximately 11 million unauthorized immigrants come to the United States and if this strategy is failing, who’s to say that the new U.S.-Mexico border wall will work? But even so, since 2009, undocumented migration has decreased drastically, thus having no need for the wall in the first place.
