The author of this selection presents a compact guide to being a successful student.
What's the secret of getting good grades?
First, set up a study place where nothing or no one can distract you. Second, get into a study frame of mind. Decide that you are going to study and learn now. Third, give yourself rewards. Fourth, skim the textbook first. After skimming, you should be able to explain to yourself what the main points of the chapter are. Fifth, take notes on what you're studying. Sixth, give up. Give up when you've had enough. You won't do much learning when you're exhausted. Lastly, take college skills course if you need it. Many students say they wouldn't have made it without one.
How can I keep up course with all my responsibilities without going crazy?
First, create a monthly calendar. Get one of those calendars with big blocks around the dates. Circle test, due dates, projects, and important days. This way those days don't sneak up on you unexpectedly. Second, make a study sechedule. Make up a sheet listing the days and hours of the weeks. Fill in your work and class hours first then try to block out some study hours. Schedule study hours for your hardest classes for the times when you feel most energetic. Remember to also leave blocks of freetime for yourself. Lastly, make a “to do” list. Just making the list seems to make the tasks “doable”. What can I do if personal problems get in the way of my studies? For personal troubles, sometimes you've just got to hang tough. If you are living thorugh a lousy time, then do something difficult. Maybe you are just making excuses to avoid attending class and studying. If your problems are really serious and real, try to make some human contacts at school. Don't isolate yourself and share your problems to others. Share it with a compatible person, someone that you think is the same as you or someone that can relate to
