Jem is very brave in this book and it shows it in many ways. In the beginning he expresses this trait by being the only one out of him, Dill, and Scout to touch the Radley’s place. He also tore up Mrs. Debouse’s flower bed knowing he would have to pay the consequences for his actions. Also when walking back from scouts Scouts’ pageant he tries to protect Scout from Mr.Ewell, I know if I was being attacked by a grown man the last thing I would do is try to fight him.
I also would characterize Jem in being idealistic. Jem always has his own view on things and wants them to be that way. For example Jem does not agree with the conviction of Tom Robinson. Atticus tries to reason with him telling him that no jury full of white men would let a negro walk away when he had supposedly raped a girl. When Jem heard this he was distraught he started to say that there should be no jury and that the judge should have complete control and told Atticus that he should go to the government building and tell them that.
Jem also showed compassion throughout this book and that’s why I consider him to be compassionate. Jem would comfort Scout when she was sad; he began to get good at this because scout makes a reference to Jem being like Atticus. Jem also expressed this trait when Scout was about to kill a bug and he told her not to because it had not done anything to her. After the trial Jem felt sorry for Tom Robinson and how it was not fair for him to be found guilty and to have an all white jury.
