Kelly McGonigal, a health psychologist did a TEDTalk “How to make stress your friend,” in June 2013 at TEDGlobal. She talked about stress and stated that although it is considered a public enemy because it makes our heart pound, and our breathing faster, it may not be bad for us. She explains that if you think stress is negative, only then will it be bad for you. She further says how when we are stressed, our body prepares for action, and stress is actually our friend, and not an enemy. Moreover, she states that our body looks for ways to help us by being able to reach out to people when in stressful situations and that one should trust themselves to be able to take on a difficult task and manage the stress. She concludes by mentioning that when you believe that stress is a positive thing and it is not bad for you, you are no longer handling stress alone.

It is very important to acknowledge that during an individual’s life, everyone goes through stressful experiences and that something can be done to help those individuals. What I found very meaningful is that instead of finding ways to reduce stress, like exercising, which not all individuals are committed to do, individuals can do something as simple as changing the way they views stress and this can make you healthier, along with being capable of coping with that stress.
The human body actually prepares us for the stress that we are going to face and it helps us go through it, it really is amazing. Not only that, but the hormones that are incorporated in the response of stress allow us to find help when we are in need of it. I have never thought about stress in this way and how some stress can actually be good for us. This TEDTalk allowed me to open my eyes and look at the bigger picture.
