Abstract
In the past, nursing education in the United States was based on teaching student nurses in the hospital setting the skills necessary to provide bedside care. Now, with the expansion of the role of nurses due to the development of cultural, socioeconomic, scientific, technological aspect in the United States, the level of education , depending on the nursing role, expanded and can reach up to the doctorate level. However, diploma programs still exist in the United States, besides two other educational pathways; associate degree programs, and bachelor degree programs. Because of changes in the practice environment, the nurse who holds a baccalaureate degree is beginning to experience greater autonomy, responsibility, participation in institutional decision making, and career advancement. “The two major current reports on nursing, Nursing Education (Benner et al. 2010)and the Future of Nursing (IOM, 2011) both recommend that entry into practice should require BSN” (Finkelman & Kenner, 2013,p 121). Nurses now can work in a variety of facilities with different scope of practice. A nurse can work in administration, such as quality nurse manager, in research, such as clinical research nurse, or education, such as an associate professor in nursing. All of those advanced roles require a nurse to advance education. A BSN is a must in order for registered nurses to further their undergraduate or graduate studies and be able to expand their role from bed side clinical nurses to more advanced roles. As discussed in earlier paragraphs, even employers, especially hospitals, prefer a BSN registered nurse than an ADN registered nurse, due to the fact that registered nurses with BSN have skills in critical thinking, leadership, and health promotion that are more advanced than the skills for registered nurses with ADN. Hence, as a new graduate registered nurse, with an ADN, I choose to further my education and do my RN to BSN program at xxx
