There are many methods in which pregnancy can be prevented, and the best one by far is most certainly abstinence (Darroch). Abstinence prevents teen pregnancies as well as all others with a one-hundred percent success rate (Teen Pregnancy Prevention). Abstinence is the practice of one avoiding sexual intercourse until he/she is betrothed. In modern days, it is called “saving oneself”. Abstinence is something that is easily taught but not so easily maintained. While many parents can never fathom their teenage daughters/sons partaking in sexual activities, it does indeed occur all around the nation. It is widely believed that these teens who exhibit this type of behavior don’t usually have open relationships with their parents or guardians (Preventing Teenage Pregnancy). If parents make themselves more available to their children, then that could easily make a big difference.
Abstinence is usually talked about in groups, and while many believe that this helps the situation, it actually worsens it sometimes (Sprague). These groups can be formed from religious groups, family, friends, etc. The problem with this though, is that while talking about sex, many times it makes teens want to have sex and this is due to the raging hormones that exist within most teenagers. Also, there are many teens who live to rebel against others and they could even end up encouraging the others within the group that sex isn’t that bad. So overall, these “abstinence talks” could sometimes be the cause of a teenage pregnancy. It’s like they say, curiosity killed the cat, and it can also cause a teenage pregnancy.
Aside from promoting abstinence, there are others who decide to avoid the inevitable and instead take another approach to ensure that their kid is well protected (Preventing Teen Pregnancy). This is done by promoting the usage of protection instead of reading the riot act and lecturing about abstinence (Darroch. Protection is the practice of using some sort of birth control method in order to prevent pregnancy. The most common use of protection is the condom which prevents pregnancy as well as STDs (Preventing Teen Pregnancy). Some parents and people believe that this is a foolish approach to take because they think that it gives teens the green light to go out and have sex. That’s not entirely true though, because this approach can be very useful indeed. There exists many teens who want to have sex despite being told to wait, and a handful of the teens in our nation will undoubtedly go out and do it anyway given the chance. Parents who know their children well and believe that their child is participating in or thinking about sexual activity are the parents who encourage their children to use protection. This act could go one of two ways though. The first and preferred is that the parent tells the child that they would really like for him/her to wait to have sex, but if he/she is found in a situation where they do decide to have sex anyway then they must at least use protection. This tells the teen that their parent really cares for them and just doesn’t want to see their life messed up by a foolish act and that could really discourage the teen from any thoughts of sex or at least encourage them to be safe if they do. The other act though is the one that should be avoided at all costs. If a parent simply tells their child to use protection, then they are indeed giving them the green light to have sex and the child will usually interpret it that way whether it was meant in that way or not. With carefully chosen words, teen pregnancy could be greatly reduced.
So overall, teen pregnancy is something that has been reducing over the years and it can easily continue to decrease so long as the right things are done. There are many government organizations that promote and help the prevention of teen pregnancy and millions of dollars have been used within these organizations. Aside from the ton of programs available though, the parents must also do their jobs and raise their children well and teach them about sex so that their teenage kids will be able to go to them if they have any questions. Parents are responsible for monitoring their kids’ activities and if there is belief that the kid is partaking in sexual activities then they should talk to their kid (Teen Pregnancy Prevention). First and foremost, abstinence should always be the first option, but if it seems that going that route is in doubt, only then should the parent promote the usage of protection of some sort if they just so happen to partake in having sex (Preventing Teen Pregnancy). This must be told to both sons and daughters, because teenage males cannot always be held accountable and sometimes are foolish enough to try to have unprotected sex, thus causing pregnancy. Ultimately, it is up to the teenager to make the right decision, but caring parents can greatly influence their children’s lives and the right action or simply a good talk can certainly make the difference and greatly prevent teenage pregnancy

The following paper will address the research process of teen pregnancy. During the years of the adolescent years it is all about knowing yourself, getting used to the changes of your body, and most of all engaging in some sort of sexual activity or activities. Adolescent sexual activity and its consequences continue to be important policy concerns in the United States. Nationwide, nearly half of all high school students report having or had sex and one-fifth of the report having or had four or more partners by the time they graduate (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The Evaluation of Adolescent Pregnancy and Prevention Approaches is a response to persistent concerns about the consequences of teen sexual activity. The fourth source by the Office Of Adolescent Health has a strong and detailed overview of teen pregnancy and childbearing. I found this source through University of Alabama Scout search engine and the audience is the general public. The source includes statistics from 2013 that 273,000 babies were born in the US from females ages 15-19. The text also mentions the sad reality that comes along with teenage pregnancy such as, mother and teen less likely to finish school, more likely to rely on public assistance, more likely to live in poverty as adults, and more likely to have children who has poorer education, behavioral, and health outcomes throughout their lives rather than a child born into older parents that are prepared for a child. Along with addressing the issues of teen pregnancy, the source also touches on strategies and approaches to prevent unwanted teen pregnancies such as the contraceptive method I talk about in my paper. This information adds to my paper because it demonstrates the problems with teen pregnancy and the steps the US can take to lower the teenage pregnancy rates.…

The numbers of teen pregnancy are rapidly increasing due to mainly unsafe sexual behavior. Without the use of the protection, not only one STD’s a threat, but pregnancy hit hand. Teen are the most vulnerable for high risk pregnancy as read in this article; In 2009, a total of 409,840 infants were born to females aged 15–19 years, for a live birth rate of 39.1 per 1,000 females in this age group. Nearly two-thirds of births to females younger than age 18 and more than half of those among females aged 18–19 years are unintended. The U.S. teen birth rate fell by more than one-third from 1991 through 2005, but then increased by 5% over 2 consecutive years. A more realistic approach to reducing unplanned pregnancies and STDs in the teenage population would be to teach them safe sexual practices, and that abstinence is in fact a choice and not a requirement. Teaching teens about safe sex would give them the confidence they need to make good decisions regarding their sex lives. A confident teen will have less trouble standing up for him/her self and saying “No. I am not okay with that.” Where as an uneducated teen will be more likely to bend to his/her partner’s desires, even if it is something he/she is not comfortable doing. This can lead the teen to rationalize things they would otherwise not be okay with, with the misguided thought that his/her partner must know what he/she is doing. After all, someone has to.…

According to source number two, a study shows that abstinence pledge programs are dramatically effective in reducing sexual activity among teens in grades 7-12. By all means, I do not agree with the previous statement, whatsoever. Reading that honestly amazes me. If studies show that the pledges actually work, then why do we have millions of teens engaging in sexual intercourse? Getting pregnant? Contracting sexually transmitted diseases? That does not make any sense. If they were effective, we would have millions of teens refraining from sex, not getting…

According to Debra W. Haffner, “There are no published studies in the professional literature indicating that abstinence-only programs will result in young people delaying intercourse.”(…) In correlation with the growth of teen pregnancy, the desire to experiment with a partner, and the advancement of more effective contraceptives, abstinence-only sex education is not the proper teaching for teenage students. Critics of abstinence-only education propose that merely telling students not to have sex, and expecting them to take note, is unrealistic. Sources, such as the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a sexual and reproductive health and research organization, show that nearly half of all adolescents will engage in some sort of sexual behavior before they leave high school. Therefore, it is vital to provide students with the proper knowledge they need to make responsible decisions. (…) Gloria Feldt, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, says, “When teens have access to the full range of reproductive health care services, including medically accurate sexuality education, they are more likely to make responsible choices about sex and sexuality.” (…)…

The Department of Health and Human Services states that, “in 2013, there were 26.6 births for every 1,000 adolescent females ages 15-19, or 274,641 babies born to females in this age group. Nearly eighty-nine percent of these births occurred outside of marriage. The 2013 teen birth rate indicates a decline of ten percent from 2012 when the birth rate was 29.4 per 1,000. The teen birth rate has declined almost continuously over the past 20 years” (hhs.gov, 2014).
