For as long most people can remember, the middle class has been the economic majority in the United States. In Edward McClelland's article "RIP, the Middle Class: 1946-2013", McClelland argues the sooner than later, the middle class will be merely nonexistent and the economy will only consist of rich and poor. He casually explains to middle class American citizens what the past middle class looked like, how the middle class stands now, and some hardships that people of the recession experienced. Growing up in the 1970's, McClelland describes how someone didn't need to graduate high school to obtain a job that could support a family, but now, in the twenty-first century, even with a high school diploma and four years of college education, no well paying jobs are promised. In this article,…

If you were asked what class you are in today's society, you most likely wouldn’t be able to answer. Human genetics give you a chance to use your instincts and personal characteristics to do what you want with your life. You can choose what job you do and also who you end up with. Class distinction in today’s society isn’t as different than in Brave New World as it would seem. Depending on the level of intelligence you have and what types of careers you pursue, you are classed into a certain category. For example you are either rich, middle class or poor. Rich people have jobs like doctors and lawyers. Most of them believe they are better than most people because of their job qualifications and their salary per-year. "We're finding that the super wealthy tell a story about why they have what they have. In essence, they believe they're a different kind of person, with genes more suitable to success." (DeAngelis, Tori. "Class Differences." American Psychological Association. N.p., Feb. 2015. Web. 23 Mar. 2016. http://www.apa.org/monitor/2015/02/class-differences.aspx) Just like in Brave New World, Alpha’s believe they have more quality of a gene, which they do but they take that to an advantage just like the rich in todays society. The richer take advantage of their money and power and spoil themselves rather than help others in need. The middle class and poor…
The middle class is also very important, because it is the working class. It consists of our policemen, firefighters, lawyers, teachers, nurses, company managers, etc. Without them, our society as a whole would have to basically be on their own with no help. Some are well educated, some are not, some are skilled workers, some are not, and some work towards becoming a part of the upper class and some aren’t, but they still work hard to provide for themselves and their families. The lower class consists of those who are not well educated, much like the Epsilons of the Brave New World.…
We live in a country where the wealthy become wealthier and the poor become poorer. Due to the functions of our economy, very few of us can become successful. I was luckily born into what was considered a middle class family. As time progressed, everything became more expensive. With the same salary that my family had, they had to pay for higher insurance costs, food prices, gas prices, and survival needs.…
The middle class is defined not by a class of people in the middle of a social hierarchy, but rather as a façade of the so-called “American dream.” New York based author and historian, Stuart Ewen, in his essay “Chosen People,” published in “Literacies” by W.W. Norton & Company Inc. in 1997 addresses the topic of the middle class and argues that social status and class are characterized by patterns of consumerism. Americans today ask themselves what the true “American dream” consists of and many face a harsh reality that this dream is not an easy lifestyle to live. Ewen and other authors, Ira Steward and Alan Dawley, go into detail focusing upon the true middle class lifestyle and how this dream becomes an unattainable goal for more Americans every year.…
Poverty the lower section of social class means you don’t make a sufficient amount of money, meaning you aren’t able to buy the necessities to be successful. If you are able to you are more likely to succeed. According to Source F, there are two types of inequality in social class that we have in America. But the one type we are most concerned with is called Red Inequality. Red Inequality is between those who have college degrees and those who do not. This affects the middle class, the average people in our society who make up the majority of our society as well. Statistics show that college graduates around the 1980s made about 40% more than those who did not go to college. Today that number has jumped up to 75% more. It also suggests that college grads have more benefits such as, being more likely to get married, less likely to get divorced, less likely to have a child out of wedlock, less likely to smoke, less likely to be obese, be more active in their communities, have more friendships, etc.. Which would also make them more likely to…
Everyone is born in a specific social class, that being, we have no choice to choose our own social class from birth. Unless members of the family are able to change their social status, it’s more likely to remain in the same class. Social class is an important factor we have as an individual because depending on the social class, we are able to experience in a wide variety of opportunities to no opportunities. Lower class family were classified to be unstable, reduce marriage options, (Lower class person seeking for it’s opponent with higher class for secure reasons), and overall, it’s all about surviving than experimenting and taking adventures. Follows up with the working class and then then the middle class, while the working class is still…
The middle class is almost the same. They have a little bit more money than the poor. So they have the choice to get the experience that they want if they can pay for it. Nine times out of ten middle class people will go broke paying for things to get more experience. This is where the work ethic kind of comes into play. They will go broke paying for a whole bunch of different experiences but as soon as they get enough experience for a job they are satisfied with they will work 100 times harder to in a way get their money back.…
Lets start with the lower class, which is made up of people who live below the poverty level. This class isn't know for how hard they work or for how much money they make. Some would say they are probably know better for not working, but that is a misconception. There might be some people in the lower class that don't work, but there is a majority of them…
Upbringing is very important in determining someone’s social class. The way in which a person is raised helps shape their personality and their morals. Both of these sub-factors help determine class. As stated before, many people believe the only determining factor of class is money but someone who was raised badly and who grew up in a bad environment like the streets will never become part of the upper class, even if they become millionaires. A lot of the basketball players in the NBA earn millions of dollars a year, but that does not mean that they belong to the upper class. LeBron James is one of the highest paid basketball players but he had a tough childhood, which involved him living in many different apartments. He would be considered part of the upper-middle class because of the way he was raised by his single mother. A different player who was raised in a middle class military family is David Robinson. He was raised very well by his parents and received good morals from them. He was an officer in the US Navy and later went on to play in the NBA. He has also earned millions of dollars, but because his upbringing was better than that of James, he would be considered part of the middle-upper class.…
The upper class is doing well rising above everyone else because they are the ones who come up with and sell ideas to foreign countries who couldn’t come up with the ideas on their own. Since the rich have control over the lower paying jobs they do what they want with them. The process is usually firing all the workers and replacing them with machines or computers which are efficient and the cheaper alternative. Including the increase of immigrants that come here in order to find jobs to support themselves and their families. As the years are passing by, the gap between the rich and the poor are growing and becoming more…
Most people describe the middle class as another social class that is based on their income but there's more to that. Half of the population makes this class, making more than the bottom quarter and less than the top quarter. Some people base the middle class by its wealth, income, consumption, and aspiration.…
My family is extremely poor, living paycheck to paycheck and off of food stamps. My father is a construction worker/contractor who emigrated from Communist Bulgaria after the fall of the Iron Curtain, while my mother is a stay-at-home housewife with no higher education. As I grew older and more capable, naturally I was expected to help contribute in some way. This led to me having to constantly work and seek jobs from as early as 13 years old (typically babysitting or paper-route type jobs at this point). This is normal for a teenager, most teens work odd jobs for some extra pay, but most of the income I made had to be put towards paying bills. Balancing work and school life was something I learned to do early, however, it became harder to…
Class generally refers to one’s social class or socio-economic class and includes: lower, middle, and upper classes. I consider myself to be included in the middle class. If I were to be more specific, I would say lower-middle class. My family…
