How to Reduce Ecological Footprint
What can we do to reduce our ecological footprint? There are many thing. For example, in our house, we compost all organic matter. We also recycle everything that our local community accepts at the recycling center. In addition, we often choose the items we buy based on the amount of packaging they have. The combination of these three things reduces our garbage output to only one 30-gallon bag every two weeks for a family of two. Not too bad. And the compost we make goes into our organic garden plot. This compost is a rich, black material that acts like a high potency fertilizer for our garden. It's composed of food waste, papertowels & napkins, the occasional egg carton and anything that will break down including yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, etc.) When turned regularly, a compost pile will get as high as 130ƒF, enough to sterilize seeds so that they don't sprout in your garden.
We have also replaced a large number of our incandescent lightbulbs with fluorescent bulbs. The cost of these bulbs has come down to the point where they are now very cost effective and they consume much less energy. They screw into your light fixtures like a traditional bulb and last up to 13 times as long. The bulbs you can buy today are much higher quality than in the past with less flicker and with a warmer light. Because an incandescent bulb wastes as much as 90% of its energy as heat, the power consumption of the cooler-running fluorescent bulbs is much less. According to the Georgia Interfaith Power & Light company, "Each 13-watt compact fluorescent (CFL), over the expected 10,000 hour life of the bulbs, will save 470 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity as compared to 60-watt incandescent bulbs. This translates to a global warming-fighting reduction of over 730 pounds of carbon dioxide. It also means a reduction of 1.6 pounds of nitrogen oxides (which contribute to ozone and acid rain) and 4.3 pounds of sulfur dioxide (which contributes to haze and acid rain), and makes

    As the world advances day-to-day, awareness for a more environmental friendly living increases. People are starting to realize that the world is literally theirs and their generations to come so now we all want to treat it with a lot more respect. The question that arises frequently is how. How do we know which is better? How do we know which one will save us money and finally how do we know which one actually does help the environment? This is especially the case in deciding which to choose between CFL bulbs and LED lights. They are both essentially better for the environment than the more common incandescent bulbs but which is better compared to the other, well let’s look at the facts. The movement of electrons solely lights LED light bulbs. Unlike CFLs, they contain no mercury or other toxic substances. LEDs are also incredibly energy efficient and use only a fraction of the energy needed to power a single incandescent bulb. In fact, LEDs use 1/50 of the energy of a standard bulb and last 10 times longer than their CFL alternatives. A single LED is rather small, but improvements in technology have allowed for the combination of bunches of LEDs together to create products ranging from flashlights to Christmas lights and lamps. Large groups of LEDs have also been used to replace traffic lights and brake lights in cars. A typical LED bulb can last up to 15 years without needing to be changed! They are not as versatile in traditional light fixtures, however, and are generally more expensive than compact fluorescents. Speaking of CFL’s these bulbs are created by taking a fluorescent tube and bending it into a compact design that fits into normal incandescent fixtures.…

    I have never considered myself as person who was interested in saving the planet or an environment lover; however, even as a child I was always fearful of contributing to the growing pollution that I saw as a child growing up in a small town in Rochester, NY. I can still see the trash that lined the sidewalks and the garbage thrown on the highways. What always haunted me was the commercial where the Native American is standing on the side of the road with a tear running down his face because we’ve destroyed his once beautiful country with the spread of liter and smog. It was from that point on that I carried “guilt” and I could not drop even the smallest gum wrapper on the ground. It wasn’t until I became a teenager that I learned there were other things that I could do to conserve the energy of the planet – like turning out lights when leaving the room or planting trees to make to make the planet greener! Simple right? So I turned the lights out and made a contribution to a charity that was planting trees… Today, I am growing and coming into my “environmentalism”, (it feels like I’m joining a new religion).
