How to Relax
Descriptive Essay

Who would have thought that you could relax your muscles, calm your mind, detoxify, moisturize, stimulate circulation and boost your immune system- all with a simple bath? After working all day, taking care of finances, running errands and housework a warm bath is all I want at the end of the day. I start by running a hot enough bath which is approximately 30-50 gallons of water, to make me sweat, grab my iPad with a book on it, pour a glass of sweet yet dry Peach Mango wine. Next I light a few scented candles for mood enhancement and pour some vanilla essential oil into the pool of pleasure and emerge myself into a hot skin stinging bubbly bliss. The warm bath salts are subtle but relaxes the body in a way nothing else can. While taking my bath, my mind escapes the financial and emotional worry that obscures my mind throughout the day. Stress melts and my mind falls into a stupor of nothingness. I sip my Peach Mango wine slowly, as not to dehydrate from the sweating and the alcohol intake. The fear of drowning in the bathtub is the only things that keep me from not going in the peaceful sleep. Next, I reach for my iPad to begin reading a book. Most of the time, I choose a book that challenges the imagination and leaves wanting more. Books that are colorful and very descriptive on each and every detail, from the person hair to the vivid plots are what interest me the most. On an occasion, I begin reading and tend to lose myself in the book and forget that I am in the bath because I am so relaxed. I get out of the now cold water and my mind is now clear. I have managed to clear my mind, relax my body and enjoy a little “me” time. This is the part I dread the most, snapping back to reality and looking at the door as if someone is behind it. I know once I open the door it’s going to be like opening Pandora’s Box. Except this box have noisy, loud children both trying to scream over each other at the same time

The significance of human life is a thematic concept portrayed in the novel Unwind, and the article, "Ukraine Babies in Stem Cell Probe." Human life is a diamond compared to any other life form, and though it is so valuable, there are some people in the world who do not appreciate it. And, Unwind reflects on this issue. Troubled teens are ordered to be unwound by their parents. Although this provides transplants needed to save lives, the lives of the children who are unwound are ignored. The harvest camps where the body parts are surgically removed have become businesses to fulfill the growing demand of healthy body parts used as transplants. It even has made the value of life cheap. The idea was presented to scare the two sides of war, but…

Let’s go back to the glorious lukewarm water for a second. To me, there’s nothing better than feeling the tension in my muscles in my muscles tighten up as I shiver through a nice long shower after a hard day’s work. I pay thousands of dollars a year to a university that provides me with colder showers than the ones I took during my one week stay in Haiti. But don’t worry it’s perfect for my masseuse who loves all the built up tension in my shoulders.…

As I type this opening paragraph for my essay, I should precursor this by saying that I 'm beginning this piece as a non-advocate for assisted suicide. It 's not just about my religious views, but also for the fact that I believe that with modern medical miracles, anything can happen. If you tap out of the fight too early, you may never know what could have happened. I understand that the situation can feel hopeless, and one can be in so much pain that one may feel like they can 't take anymore, but I 've witnessed first-hand desperate situations turn into miracles. My father was diagnosed in 2009 with Stage 3 Esophageal cancer. The chances of him living, especially at 65 years old, were thirty-three percent, at best. Today, he is one hundred percent in remission and living his life as a healthy senior man. That example alone is my reason for not believing in assisted suicide.…

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils and to know what aromatherapy is, one must know that essential oils are the steam distillates derived from the aromatic plants (Freeman, 2009). Aromatherapy dates back to the era in which medicine was first discovered and can be labeled as preventative care. It is said that Hippocrates stated that “the way to health is an aromatic bath and a scented massage every day”. This wordage indicates that preventative care was also meant to go hand in hand with the medical field, in other words, there should not be a gap, as we are greatly seeing in today’s Western Medicine. The beginning of modern day aromatherapy was studied by a French chemist whose name was Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, PhD and dates back to the 1920’s. His approach to findings included studies on burns that he sustained in his laboratory in which he treated successfully with lavender oil (Horowitz, 2011). These findings led to today’s studies of aromatherapy.…

Okay, let’s get the really obvious one out of the way right off the bat. Many people come all the way to Hawaii to simply lay down on a lounge chair, a towel, or in a hammock and let the gentle ocean breezes waft across them while they read through a book they might not be caught dead reading back home. And there’s absolutely nothing…

Although there is evidence, albeit few, that supports the short-term mood changes concerning essential oils, the evidence supporting physiological improvements is lacking. As stated in a Yale Scientific publication by Cynthia Deng “Aromatherapy: Exploring Olfaction”, it debunked the “evidence” aromatherapist have pointed to as “anecdotal rather than scientifically grounded”. In fact, Deng references a recent study by Ohio State University in which it found that aromatherapy did improve moods, but did not effect stress hormone levels, wound heeling, or blood pressure-essentially physiological responses. This is further expanded upon in a study presented to British Psychological Society Annual conference in which Dr. Neil Martin of Middlesex University related how 60 volunteers participated in a cold-pressor test. For fifteen minutes, the subject would have their arm immersed in cold water. A third was exposed to the lemon oil, a third to the smell of machine oil, and a third to no smell at all. After five minutes those who were not exposed to any smell reported the least amount of pain. This study, among others, illustrated the non-existent alleviation the essential oils claimed to…
