Phineas Gage is a famous and well-known name in the world of psychology and neurological studies. He made a mark in history, on September 13, 1848, when this 25 year old man tragically survived a severe brain injury at a work site, acting as an ignition: sparking up the interest of many in the study of neurology and psychology. Phineas had a rod at 3ft 8 inches in length and 1.25 inch in diameter (Costandi, 2006) penetrate into his head, tearing right through his front part of his head. This accident was well documented on and became quite famous. However, when this occurred, the neurological studies weren’t as advanced as they have become in today’s date. With the new technological advances that have been invented within the last 165 years, things we could not investigate back then could be investigated now. When this occurred, it was well described, observed and analyzed by Dr. John Martin Harlow, who gave us much of the most important information we have today even without any advanced technological help. This misfortune influenced neurological studies and the effects brain damage could cause to behaviour, attitude and self-change. If the accident that occurred with Phineas Gage were to of happen in this generation, an experiment and quasiexperimental study could be used to research the neural bases of the behavioral changes that emerged following the accident that occurred.…

When it comes to sports, every player in a team plays a major part. They work together so that they may achieve victory and success. If one player goes down, they all suffer. One of the most common sports-related injuries is a concussion. A concussion is a brain injury characterized by an onset of impairment of cognitive and/or physical functioning, and is caused by a blow to the head, face, or neck, or a blow to the body that causes a sudden jarring of the head (i.e., a helmet to the head, being knocked to the ground). After concussed, a player can be vulnerable to brain damage and can experience physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Nevertheless, the majority of players who have received a concussion can fully recover if given enough time to heal. Though this is known as a fact, many people fail to make this a major priority after a player has been concussed. Players who have experienced a concussion should be required to sit out for longer periods of time so it can be assured that said player has completely healed.…

    Football helmet

The average tackle football player has a natural tendency to experience fear and tension when thinking about the heavy rate of concussion injuries within the sport. In response to the violently physical nature of the game, Riddell Sports has produced a helmet that provides the best defense to worries and consequences of a concussion. The Riddell Revolution 360 football helmet has been constructed by engineers to protect the mental processes and safety of players. As a football player myself, I can think of no better alternative for head trauma prevention than this helmet. Riddell takes into account and states that players sustain roughly 950 impacts to the head over the course of a season. As a result of this, the helmet places a strong emphasis on protection of the most impacted part of the head, the front. Patented in 2012, HIT technology was established by Riddell in their experiment labs to measure the severity and location of head impacts from all directions. This technology proves that detrimental impact to the brain can go unnoticed or misunderstood, and use it to prevent future mental problems for players. This product changes the way participants feel comfortable and confident on the playing field more than ever before. The technology that is added includes a new carbon steel facemask that flexes in reaction to impact. Also added to the helmet was a new face frame structure which is made up of continuous hexagonal shaped padding on the interior that shapes to players heads for a custom and tight fit. This is important for reducing the amount of force to the head, which will allow the sport to be more commonly tolerated by everyone interested. With the rise of cognitive damage in football due to head trauma, parents are more hesitant than ever to allow their children play the game at a young age. However, parents can be assured that the expanded technology in the Riddell 360 will protect their children like never before.…

Many sports fans are aware of the common injuries athletes sustain in their time of play such as concussions, but what many people do not know of are what happens to an athlete after sustaining the head trauma. Diseases like Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy(CTE) can affect athletes many years after sustaining concussions and can lead to death. Many sports corporations such as the NFL are taking steps to help prevent further head trauma to their athletes, but many critics are questioning whether the NFL is really doing enough. Caused by direct and sudden hits to the head, people can obtain concussions while playing sports or car accidents. After the first concussion, the chances of getting another increases significantly. Doctors complete minor exams to test the injured athlete’s abilities and compare the patient’s history to their reactions in the exam after the injury. Rest after the injury is key to the athlete’s healing process, so the concussion can heal and not advance. After getting a concussion, the athlete may experience changes in their everyday activities because the injury affects their capabilities such as memory and balance. These symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years depending on the severity of the concussion, and the injured person’s care for the injury. Waiting to return to sport activities helps the athletes to return to their normal functioning which will help them in the future because they will not receive another head injury directly after their most recent one. The best way to heal is to take the required time off of the sport and rest to help the brain recover from the head trauma it has experienced (Smoots). Pathophysiology and neurologic recovery studies have refined the guidelines for the return of players to the game. To help prevent a second, more dangerous, concussion many organizations have endorsed the strict guidelines, and provided health evaluations and care for the injured youth athletes…

I was still fourteen by the time I experienced my first concussion. The day was absolutely beautiful. The sun was scorching everyone’s skin as we all raced to my school’s dirt field searching for the shade the trees would throw across the ground, but the excitement that was building in everyone was by far more intense than the heat. Today was the day that my class was allowed to play flag football, an event we had all been looking forward to since the start of the fourth quarter. The…

Caitlyn wakes up, gets ready, and walks outside to her car. As soon as she walks out of the front door, she gets an instant headache, just from the faint sunlight peeking through the clouds. Daily activities become a struggle, all because of one thing- a concussion. A concussion is a neurological injury which is typically caused by a hit or shake to the head. Concussions affect many people daily, and even though some people think it is something to brush off of one's shoulder, it is not. I have had multiple concussions in the past, which have affected me by altering my focus and study habits, which typically harmed my grades in the past. This pushed me to work harder and to continue doing so.…
