This noticeable feature, however, dates back centuries. Rebuses, or characters used to represent words, were being used in the 1600s, with the creation of IOU (I owe you). As discussed by David Crystal, there is no difference between S.W.A.L.K (sealed with a loving kiss), which was used in the war to shorten letters, and today's modern LOL (laughing out loud). Abbreviations have been created as a natural, intuitive response to what people have encountered in other…

In ALWAYS RUNNING, Luis J. Rodriguez offers a loosely organized but thoroughly wrenching account of his experience growing up in and around Watts and the Las Lomas barrio, just east of Los Angeles. Rodriguez, a poet and journalist who now resides in Chicago, was born in 1954 in El Paso, Texas. His parents, recent immigrants from Mexico, soon migrated to the Los Angeles area. There, Rodriguez experienced the indignities of poverty, prejudice, and nearly unchecked police brutality. Joining a gang and living “la vida loca” (the crazy life) came naturally in such a setting. Rodriguez spent much of his adolescence stealing, fighting (usually against Latinos from a rival barrio), and getting high in every conceivable way.…

The emergence of the civil rights movement after World War II was one of the most important events in US history. It forced white Americans to recognize the systematic discrimination that affected African Americans and other non-whites. And it shattered the postwar consensus and sparked a revival of liberal reform. These reforms included landmark civil rights legislation that outlawed discrimination and restored the voting rights of blacks in the South. Reformers in the 1960s also increased government regulation of business, expanded the welfare state, and passed laws that addressed new “quality of life” issues. By the late 1960s, new political forces committed to combating discrimination and protecting the rights of minorities had gained substantial public support and sparked new tensions within the Democratic coalition. Inspired by a new “rights-oriented liberalism,” they pushed the Democrats to embrace new causes and appeal to new constituencies.…

I believe using abbreviations can truly help communications between health care professionals, because it makes it easier to convey what you are trying to say. For example, instead of saying or writing down “cardiopulmonary resuscitation” you could say “CPR”. This also helps speed up the process when a transcriptionist copies down a report; they don’t necessarily have to write out the full meaning and the physician who reads the report will still have a full understanding of what it says.…
