In the novel “True Grit” by Charles Portis, two characters in particular have the courage, roughness, and determination you associate with the term true grit. Mattie Ross, driven by her determination to avenge the death of her father, despite her young age, recruited and partnered with a retired lawman whom many thought was guilty, yet never convicted, of lawless killings. Mattie’s courage was obvious as she continued her journey in spite of the many hardships she met including having her arm amputated after being bitten by a snake. The other character, General Rooster Cogburn, who agreed to help Mattie was physically disabled and had a serious alcohol problem, yet he was determined to do whatever he had to do to earn the money he was promised.…

The title " Blue-collar Brilliance" used by author Mike Rose in his writing reveals what he is going to talk about and more precisely the opinion he will have. The author starts his writing in a powerful way by using a relevant anecdote of his mother Rosie, waitress in a restaurant. He explains to us how his mother should know not only how to work efficiently but also in an organized way. How she should memorize every single order and to whom each order was. How she should understand and respond to the different physiological and emotional needs of the clients.…
The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…
Beating something can require perseverance in many different ways. In The Call of the Wild, Buck is taken from his cozy home and put on a sled dog team. He fights with the lead dog, Spitz, often, until one time Buck finally beat him in a fight. On the other hand, my Gram went to college and took a speech class. She was afraid of speaking in front of a large group of people, so she used perseverance to help her control her decisions. While Buck and Gram are different, they were both afraid at one point and both beat a fear they had. Both Gram and Buck had to experience something new, whether it was fighting with another dog or going to college and talking in front of people.…

The success of the cadets does not rely on their knowledge and physical performance, but their amount of grit. Grit is the ability to be able to adjust to situations that had setbacks, and the endurance to fulfil set goals. Duckworth was able to devise a test that would calculate the amount of grit the cadets had. The cadets who had the most grit turned out to be the ones that were able to graduate from the academy. Grit also can be connected to the outside world for instance in school, jobs, life goals, sports, and fields where people face…
“Grit is that 'extra something' that separates the most successful people from the rest. It's the passion, perseverance, and stamina that we must channel in order to stick with our dreams until they become a reality” (Bradberry). Throughout someone life series of events may occur, some of them will be good and some of them will bad, but the way people deal and react with the bad occurrences shape their characters and may lead to good events later one, meaning the amount of grit someone has can lead to how successful someone will be later in live. This can be shown by comparing the childhood, the father-son relationship, and the adulthood of two different literary characters, Joe Rantz, from the Boys in The Boat, and Amir, from The Kite Runner.…

What is grit? Grit is usually considered pushing through when you are in pain. Grit to me is having a strong mindset not just when you are in pain but when you are struggling. Many people put off their assignments to the last minute, but someone with grit will try hard from the beginning to finish it with little to no flaws. I have had many experiences where I have had to persevere but didn't.…
