On the other hand Tom was born with wealth and status which is why Daisy chooses him. Tom looks down on Gatsby because he was born into a poor farmer’s family. Tom’s status means he is seen by Daisy as being better than Gatsby. Inheriting his wealth also makes Tom seem like a more respectable person compared to Gatsby who illegally made his money. Tom is annoyed about going to Gatsby’s party. His reluctance to go is because Gatsby is known to be a criminal.
