I almost positive that almost everybody has heard of Julius Caesar and know him as some important ancient Roman. However most people have never heard about Caesar, his strategy, and the Battle of Alesia. Neither had I for that matter or at least not before my teacher assigned this assignment. That is why I am here to tell you about Caesar’s strategy that he used at the Battle of Alesia.
I am going to start this essay by giving a short summary of Caesar’s life, since he is kind of important to this paper. Gaius Julius Caesar, a descendant of Trojan Prince Aeneas, was born on either July 12 or 13, 100 B.C., in Rome, Italy.
Now I shall tell you about the battle of Alesia. No, not Caesar’s strategy yet, just a little about the battle. The Battle of Alesia took place in, you guessed it, Alesia during 52 B.C. This battle was between the Romans and mostly all the Gaul tribes. The Gauls didn’t want to be part of the Romans’ empire so they retaliated and Rome went to war with them. He was the one who realized that if the Gauls wanted to rid of their Roman rulers they would have to put aside their differences and join forces. Most of them obliged to Prince Vercingetorix, whom I am going to call Vercinge, but, some sided with the Romans as well. Caesar is concerned that they might just be able to conquer him and marches straight to Alesia, a fortified hill town, where the Gauls have decided to make a stand with 70,000 men in tow. As soon as they arrive Caesar sees why they chose this spot. He knows that if he decides to attack now he will suffer immense casualties. He can either retreat or lay siege. I think you can guess which one he chose. Caesar starts to spreading his soldiers into 8 camps surrounding the hill. While the Romans are taking up their positions, the
