D-Day started on June 6th on 1944, also known as Operation Overlord.
This invasion was fought by courageous men and was ended by courageous men. This started the end of Hitler's reign and of the nazis. The start was the attack on a beach on the coast of France. It was split into five separate parts, these five parts were Juno, Sword, Utah, Omaha, and Gold. The germans had heavy defenses on the beach. One of them was the Atlantic Wall, this was a system of fortifications. The Atlantic Wall was 1,670 miles long and took 2 years to build.
The D-Day Normandy invasion was the largest amphibious attacks in history. Some 156,000 troops landed on the beaches. It began 6:30 am. This huge army contained British, Canadian, and American troops. These men had to go against artillery fire and mounted defenses in bunkers that were part of the atlantic wall. He was paranoid that another attack was going to come from the Seine river. As well of the absence of Rommel while he was on his leave during the invasion. This invasion also prevented Hitler from sending anymore troops to Franco to defend against the soviets. Due to the confusion the allied forces were able to liberate France from nazi control. Hitler was hit with a psychological blow so hard that he committed suicide on April 30th. The allied forces took this as the unconditional surrender of the Nazis and their reign over Germany. Many lives were lost during D-Day, some 209,000 allied soldiers lost their lives. Casualties for the germans were estimated to 216,000 after D-Day
