‘A Few Good Men’
This movie deals with the code and honor system of the some soldiers in the United States Marines. A young soldier, PFC Santiago, is killed while two other soldiers are supposed to be administering what it called a Code Red. A Code Red is when the members of a soldiers platoon deal with another soldier who is not performing up to standards, an example would be forcefully giving a soldier a shower because they refuse to bathe. However, the Code Red was sent to be carried out by Jack Nicholson a senior officer, who has allowed the two soldiers to take the blame for murder.
Followership
The Challenges of Dissent: “Expressing disagreement is an important ethical duty of followership” (Johnson 26).
In the Marines, as with any branch of military, behaving like one single unit with many links keeps everyone alive. The Marines who carried out the Code Red were followers, if they did not obey their orders there could have been sever consequences for them. In another instance, a soldier was denied food and only able to drink water for seven days. One of the soldiers who carried out the Code Red on PFC Santiago, Lance Corporal Dawson, was caught bringing food to the soldier. He received a negative monthly report that caused him to be overlooked for promotion even though he graduated at the top off his class and received numerous awards. This was his punishment for not following orders.
