The volume, inflection, tone, and speed of someone’s words can express a multitude of meanings such as an emergency, panic, happiness, or fear. Certain phrases can be stated the same way but the manner in which that phrase is said can change the course of an entire conversation. For example, if someone were to respond with “I’m fine” when asked how they were doing, it could be interpreted in a variety of different ways. If that phrase was said lightly and with a smile that person could be fine, but if those same two words were to be said in a slightly colder tone with some eye-rolling the meaning would completely change.
