Howler Monkey Research Paper

The reason I chose a Howler monkey is because it is a loud animal just like me. Howler monkeys are the loudest of all monkeys. They are very soft and cuddling creatures. These monkeys are very good with humans.
These types of monkeys call to let others know where their territory is, warning them to stay away. The calls sound like a loud shouting roar. After one group of howler monkeys call another group of Howlers answer. Howler monkeys tend to do this in the morning and at the end of the day.
Monkeys are divided into two main groups new world and old world monkeys. Old world monkeys live in Africa and Asia. New world monkeys like capuchins and howler monkeys live in Central and South America. These monkeys are very slow moving creatures. They like to stay on top of tree tops and barely ever come down. Some monkeys are omnivores, eating nuts, seeds, eating fruits, meat, and insects like small birds or crabs. Other monkeys are strict herbivores, living in trees and eating mostly leaves. Monkeys get their water from most of the food they eat. Howler monkeys have to be super careful not to eat to
many leaves, the toxins in leaves can poison them. If one monkey eats to much the toxin can spread throughout the herd, all monkeys could die.
Howler monkeys are considered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species to be a species of Least Concern, habitat loss due to logging and clear cutting to make room for grazing and agriculture has led to a drop in some populations of this specie, especially those in the Argentinean provinces of Salta, Formosa, Misiones, and Corrientes. Although howler monkeys home overlaps with several protected areas and their flexibility to new environments makes them unlikely to see significant population losses. Most of the big jungle cats such as leopards, jaguars and cougars will catch and eat monkeys whenever they get a chance
There is no set mating season for the Howler Monkey. If they have a place to nest and have plenty of food, then they will be set. The males usually will initiate the mating process. There is a waiting period of about 180 days from conception to birth. It is very rare to have more than one monkey born. When the infant is about one-year-old the monkey will have to leave the group. During the first year the mom attempts to make sure her baby meets all the requirements to be on its own. Males normally inspect the genitalia of females by visual and olfactory means. Copulations sometimes occur with the females sitting, instead of standing as occurs in most other primates.
Monkeys come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from large baboons to tiny marmosets.
No matter what they plan to make their next meal, monkeys have developed adaptations that help them hunt their food. Prehensile tails, large family groups and the use of tools all make sure monkeys have a full belly. Prehensile means they are able to use their tail almost like a third hand, using it to help them hang or climb from branches. The head and body of adult howler monkeys range from twenty-two to thirty-six inches long and their tail adds twenty-three to thirty-six inches. Other monkeys such as capuchins and howler monkeys use their tails to get around in their homes, which is trees. Since most of their diet contains leaves, having a prehensile tail makes reaching almost all parts of the tree for a meal a breeze. They also use their tails to hang from branches while
eating.
The average lifespan of a Howler Monkey in the wild is about fifteen years. If living with humans the monkeys can live up to twenty years. The damage of the natural habitat for the Howler Monkey is a big factor that affects their survival. They are often sold as elegant pets for thousands of dollars. These animals are not safe enough living with humans, they tend to stop eating and are scared easily. Howler Monkeys are members of the kingdom animal, phylum chordate, class mammal, order primate, family atelidae, genus alouata, species cebidae.
Monkeys live in large groups. By living in large groups for their entire lives, monkeys can learn important information about how and where to find food from skilled monkeys in the group. Being in large groups keeps the monkey’s food safe from other groups. Howler monkeys are large, fairly stocky monkeys that are totally black in color with the exception of a fringe of long golden hairs on the sides. Male head-body length is forty-seven to sixty-three centimeters. The Females head-body length is forty-six to sixty centimeters. The male tail length is sixty to seventy centimeters. The Female tail length is fifty-five to sixty-six centimeters. A male’s weight is four point five to nine point eight kilograms. A female weights three point one to seven point six kilograms.
Most of the big wild cats such as leopards, jaguars and cougars will catch and eat monkeys whenever they get a chance. Nearly every rain forest or jungle is where monkeys live is also home to a species of eagle that likes to eat monkeys. Big snakes such as pythons and boa constrictors kill and eat monkeys, and so do crocodiles and caimans. Some chips such as apes sometimes catch and kill smaller monkeys.
