BUS 310 Human Resources Management
January 29, 2012
Describe the nature of the organization, its size, and any specific human resource challenges it faces. The organization I selected is Chick-fil-A which opened its first restaurant in 1946 by Truett Cathy. I chose Chick-fil-A because I love what they stand for and can relate to why they are so effective in generating sales. Their mission statement is “Be America’s Best Quick-Serve Restaurant”. Truett Cathy believes that all franchised Chick-fil-A Operators and their Restaurant employees should have an opportunity to rest, spend time with family and friends, and worship if they choose to do so therefore they close their doors every Sunday. Chick-fil-A is a fast food restaurant and has 1500 locations in 39 states and Washington, D.C. Annual sales are up to $3.5 Billion. Human resources challenges that could be faced at Chick-fil-A can be very difficult. There are no real Human Resource Managers in the store locations. The individuals that conduct the hiring/firing processes are the managers in the store, whether it is the hiring manager, the line manager, the office manager, the assistant manager or the store manager. The managers have to be educated on all of the HR laws and guidelines in the event something should arise. The managers go thru extensive training when it comes to HR since there really is no HR staff on site.
Describe the major legal concerns of the organization and recommend how those concerns should be addressed.
Some legal concerns I believe that could arise mainly would be due to discrimination. One could feel discriminated against due to religion. Truett Cathy was a very religious man henceforth, closing his doors on Sundays so he and his family could attend worship services. Due to laws in place to protect employees in regards to their different religious beliefs they have to be careful and not exploit religion.
