One injustice currently affecting my community, my family, and many other families throughout the state of Alabama is the Alabama Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program (PACT). Instead of maintaining a “college fund” savings account at the bank or investing in stocks or bonds, many parents and grandparents “were sold on PACT and its assurance that they were paying tomorrow’s tuition costs with today’s dollars” (White, 3). So, they “decided to play it safe with guaranteed tuition for their children and grandchildren when they reached college age with a plan that was backed by the State of Alabama” (White, 3). Now, those parents and grandparents who had the foresight to plan ahead and secure the future education of their children and grandchildren by sacrificing to purchase PACT Plans are being told that education is in jeopardy and is no longer guaranteed (White, 1).…

An analysis of the public school system reveals one challenge facing community colleges and universities: Rising costs are putting pressure on enrollment or forced schools to limit the number of courses they can offer. Every year the result has been a dramatic drop in the number of students the system can afford to teach. Most colleges have also reduced the size of their staff, and provided fewer student services. Without staff, these young people fail to understand why they are unable to get an education or even graduate from a college or university. The best way to help students avoid budget cuts is Proposition 30, which will not only prevent a possible $6 billion in cuts to public schools and colleges, but it will also provide billions of dollars in public funding that schools at all levels desperately need. Taking this into account, this essay considers the pros and cons of proposition 30, particularly in the form of increasing the personal income tax of higher earning Californians by 1 to 3 percent for seven years.…

The article, The Reality of Free Community College Tuition, written by Fran Cubberley and published on April 1st, 2015 in the Journal of College Admission, discusses President Obama’s proposal of making community college two-year institutions tuition-free. Cubberley believes that the adoption of this proposal “would have a profoundly positive impact on American society” (Cubberley). Because Cubberley is vice president for enrollment management at Delaware County Community College, she was able to provide this statistic: in her institution 1,300 students registered but withdrew before courses started, most of them because they could not finance tuition (Cubberley). With this mindset, it is clear why Cubberley…

Inflation is the general cost of living that increases over time. With the price of foods, goods, and services increasing, it’s only befitting that the cost of college will continue to rise. Nearly twice as fast as growth in costs in medical care, another area greatly recognized for fast-rising prices. It's also more than twice as fast as the overall consumer price index during that same…

America has been a world dominating country for decades, but in the later years we've seen a constant fall in the American economy and its future. We live in a highly competitive, global economy, and if our economy is to be strong, we need the best-educated workforce in the world. Education is also essential for personal well-being. We won’t achieve that if, every year, hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college while millions more leave school deeply in debt. We need to ensure that every young person in this country who wishes to go to college can get the education that he or she desires, without going into debt and regardless of his or her family’s income.…
