The location of this story sets along the Mississippi River. It takes place before the Civil War since slavery was still an issue.
It meant freedom from obligations of school, rules, and civilized behavior. For both Huck and Jim it was a place of adventure.
II. Point of View:
“I felt so mean I could almost kissed his foot to get him to take it back. It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger: but i done it, and I warn't ever sorry for it …show more content…
afterward, neither. I didn't do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn't have done one if I'd knowed”(82).
He is telling the story as it happens in his own juvenile voice. Hucks perspective is in first person, therefore we follow every step of his way and can only rely on him to tell the truth.
III. Conflict
“Pap got too handy with his hick’ry, and I couldn't stand it. I was all over welts. He got to going away so much, too, and locking me in. Once he locked me in and was gone three days. It was dreadful lonesome...I was scared. I made up my mind I would fix up some way to leave there. I had tried to get out of that cabin many a time, but i couldn't find no way.”(23).
Getting locked up all the time spurred Huck to leave for good.
It made him to start thinking about his escape. This conflict is external because he was being physically abused by his father. For the ones who kept him civilized all their hard work went to waste. Huck’s plan to escape works and has to keep fleeing so nobody can find him.
IV. Characters:
Huckleberry Finn is the main character and narrator in the story. He is significant because he shows us that he was more civilized in his own way by treating Jim right than society was. Huck is a thoughtful, youthful, and ingenious.
Jim was Miss Watson’s slave. When he escaped he became Huck’s partner throughout their journey down the river. Jim is important because he proves the opposite of what he had been perceived as; he was as human and loyal as any other person opposite of his race. Jim can be described as loyal, courageous, and apprehensive. Tom Sawyer is Huck’s best friend from hometown. Tom helps Huck set Jim free after they find out he’s been captured. Tom is significant because he goes against his will/beliefs to help set a slave free. He realized that society’s expectations were wrong. Tom is one adventurous, creative, and compliant boy.
V.
Theme:
“I was powerful glad to get away from the feuds , and so was Jim to get away from the swamp. We said there warn't no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft don’t. You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft.”(111).
The desire for freedom is common to all humans.
Another book that echoes freedom is The Color Purple by Alice Walker. Both Main characters leave their original home because of the cruelty they were living and decided to take an adventure to only find out that it felt good to be free and that they were actually worth something.
