stolen one and flew off with it. He took it upon himself to take a dragon himself and follow him. And there he was! Hugo was sitting by the lake with his dragon, just staring at the stars. This time he would not get away because the watchman vowed to himself not to get distracted. So he slowly came up behind Hugo and whoosh! The dragon noticed him as he walked up and smacked him away with its tail.
“What do you think you’re doing with that dragon?” the watchman yelled.
“He’s my dragon now. I found him, I took him, I flew away with him. He’s mine, castle watchman,” Hugo exclaimed.
“That is not your dragon! That dragon belongs to the castle zoo, and nobody is allowed to take them! The king will be furious when I turn you in, and I am turning you in. You ragamuffin are coming with me to the king to be sentenced for this illegal activity,” the castle watchman exclaimed. Hugo tried to run, but now that the watchman knew the angle he was trying to get at, he caught him without hesitation. They fly back to the castle, wrestling the stolen dragon behind them with a rope. Carefully landing back in the dragon pen, Hugo takes this opportunity to run again. Through the dank castle walls and dark corridors, he manages to find the place he entered originally. Unfortunately, he wasn’t quick enough. For the castle watchman was right behind him, and there was no way of getting out unless he wanted to enter a moat. With the hungry alligators staring ferociously at him from the window, Hugo calmly walked to the watchman. “Do you know the trouble you’ve caused me, kid?” huffed the watchman.
“You mean run and try to escape from you? Yeah, that was kind of my point. However, I can’t run anymore unless I want to be gator food.” Hugo sighed. Reluctantly, he let the watchman take his hands and tie them with prickly rope.
---------------------
They began walking to the king for Hugo’s sentencing. Hugo knew he wouldn’t get a bad sentence because he thought that stealing a dragon was harmless. He thought maybe he would get a few days in the dungeon, clean the zoo pens, or work in the kitchen to prepare feasts every night. It was to Hugo’s surprise when the king approached him as he walked into his throne room.
“Young man! You dare try and steal one of my dragons? You dare cause this much hassle to my poor watchman? And above all, you dare think you’d get away with it all? No, sir. Not under my kingdom, you won’t.” The king was ranting now, and Hugo was getting annoyed. Rolling his eyes, he listened anyway.
“Do you know the sentence for a young man like you when you steal a dragon and try to escape?” the king asked.
“No, your majesty, I don’t,” Hugo whispered.
“Well, with that innocent act you trying to pull, I sentence you to reform potion!” the king screeched. Reform potion? Ok, now Hugo was sweating nervously. Reform potion would wipe away any memories he had, his personality, everything! He would be a new person entirely!
He’s not serious, wait, is he serious? I need to run now! NOW! Find an exit, and run, and don’t look back! I have to get out of here! Hugo was thinking of any way out of this gargantuan castle, but as he looked around, he couldn’t find anything. No windows, no unlocked doors, no crates, no trapdoors, nothing!
“It will happen in the morning when the wizard gets here from two kingdoms over. I hope you’ve learned your lesson.” the kind scolded.
Learned my lesson?
LEARNED MY LESSON? How can I ‘learn’ anything when my mind's going a million miles an hour? You know what? It won’t matter because I won’t be here! I will find a way out! With Hugo holding back tears, he let the watchman drag him to the dungeon for his last night of being himself. The dank and dark dungeon was unwelcoming to Hugo. The rope had left red scratches on his raw skin. He rubbed his wrists and sat on the cold, wet floor of his cell. With nothing else to do, he tried to sleep but was consumed by his own thoughts. Restless and uncomfortable, he managed to calm down and close his eyes, drifting off in the process. Morning came fast, and the big day had arrived. Hugo was drowsy and emotional but got up anyways to be dragged to the potion lab. Any last thoughts he had of escaping were lost, for there was nothing he could do.
“Hugo! This is the wizard that will be giving you the reform potion. He has whipped it up for you, but first I need the armor you're wearing. You are no longer a knight. Here are some clothes to wear for the last few minutes before you get the potion.” the king’s words were hazy to Hugo. He gently took the clothes and went into the hallway and found a closet filled with fur coats and fancy hats to change into the beige clothes. He arrived back into the room and sat down in the chair where he would drink the reform
potion.
“Ready, Hugo?” the wizard asked.
“No.” he replied
“Well, I am sorry. I really am, but I can’t refuse orders from the king.” the wizard rummaged through the cupboard to find a glass vial filled with greenish-blue liquid.
“Ah, here it is. Here you go, Hugo. You might feel drowsy after you wake up because it knocks you right off your feet!” the wizard chuckled. Hugo looked at it, trying to hold back tears.
Bottoms up! Goodbye, world…… Hugo drank the sticky potion, letting it get stuck in the corners of his lips. He didn’t care at this point, he was too tired to care about anything.
“Wait! Wait! I gave you the wrong one! That sends you to the future! Here! They were right next to each other, and they were the same color! Don’t drink. It. Ohhh nooo!” the wizard cried.
“You mean to tell me that the potion Hugo just drank, sends him into the future?! I wanted him to be different, I wanted his mind to be cleared! Not, send him to the future as a free person, roaming around wherever he pleases!” The king was furious, pacing back and forth, trying to figure out what had just happened.
“I’m sorry your majesty, it was an honest mistake!” the wizard tried to explain.
“Enough! Pack your bags, sir! I don’t want a remedy for this, or an anecdote, or even an apology! I want you to get out of my castle, and get out of my KINGDOM!” the king ferociously screamed while rubbing his head and trying not to keel over and fall to the ground. The damage was done, however. Hugo was gone, into the future somewhere, in some place. The king had no choice but to bring Hugo back to his cell with a guard standing by him to see if he moves or wakes up. What the king didn’t know, however, was that Hugo was awake; in the year 2017. ---------------
Hugo sits in the chair where he received the potion and starts to wake up. Dreary and fatigued, he opens his eyes and sees strange buildings. He tries to stand up stumbles a little and begins to walk.
Where am I? This isn’t ***TOWN NAME****. What is this place? Who are all of these people? How do I know who I am? Why don’t I feel different? Why didn’t I forget anything? I feel the same.
“Hey! Hey, you! Move! You’re in the way! Get out of the bike lane!” A man was screaming at Hugo, but he was too confused
Hugo sits in the chair where he received the potion and starts to wake up. Dreary and fatigued, he opens his eyes and sees strange buildings. He tries to stand up, stumbles a little, and begins to walk. Still very confused, he walks around to try and see what this place is that he was relocated to. There were signs everywhere and they all said “Welcome to New York” and “Countdown to 2018”. Since Hugo lived in the year 1427, he was even more confused and frustrated. He looked and asked anyone why he was here and how to get home. Nobody knew what he was talking about and ignored him. With Hugo on his own, it’s up to him to figure out why he’s in 2017 and in New York.
