“Change is inevitable,” even though most people acknowledge that their lives have changed over the past decade, they don’t believe change is constant. However, in the belief of the writer, with time our personality grows and changes when traumatic events come along the way.
Socialization is the process of human development where factors including family, friends, school, workplace influences us and shapes our personality. Throughout life, we experience many events, the events could be traumatic or cherishing but what matters is how it affects us. Life, lessons and experiences help us to look at the world from a different angle and have our own perception of different aspects of life. Compared with external factors, such as a pay rise, getting married or finding employment, personality changes with time.
Several large research studies conducted over the past few years show that a person's personality naturally changes over the course of adulthood, in response to life events such as entering a committed relationship or advancing in a career. From the ages of 20 to 65, people report increases in positive traits, such as conscientiousness, and decreases in negative traits, such as neuroticism. Most people tend to become more emotionally stable. In other words, their personalities improve. In a longitudinal analysis, 8625 individuals were examined Big Five personality measures at two time points to determine whether an individual’s personality change or not. It was then proved that personality changes at least as much as economic factors and relates much more strongly to changes in life satisfaction. Results therefore suggest that personality can change and that such change is important and meaningful.
