Setting: Deke and Bailey are new to their high school and decided to become more engaged in their school by joining the book club. During their first gathering, Deke and Bailey hit it off and decided that for now on they will discuss the book via email before going to their club meetings. They meet every week on Tuesdays at 7:00 P.M., and their newest book is called “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker.

Throughout the novel, it’s a trend that the majority of the black female characters in this book are often victims of violence, both physical and emotional. The men in the novel use violence in order to exert their dominance over women, many examples being beating and raping them. From the moment Celie was born she suffers violence from her father, and then once married, suffers violence from her husband. Celie is just surrounded by violence, and as a result, reacts by shutting down emotionally and becomes submissive. Other female characters, however, such as Sophia, prove their strength in facing the violence they are presented with. After suffering so much abuse, many women realize how much they’ve been degraded, and decide for themselves that they don’t want to be dragged down anymore. In the novel, Celie eventually realizes the extent of the violence committed against her, and finds her willpower to leave her abusive husband behind to start a new life. Although violence affected Celie’s dignity the majority of her life, she was able to surpass that and create a new dignity for
