Human Nature In Lord Of The Flies
Lord of the Flies Human Nature In the novel, Lord of the Flies, Golding has young and innocent children on a remote island to test how human nature works. Golding uses objects such as the conch and the Beast to reflect our society politically and psychologically. The novel shows human’s own illness and human nature. Human nature is unavoidable and can be a source of evil. It is one’s nature to do whatever it takes in order to survive. By trying to survive one’s evil creeps out. Jack and his hunters showed the most evil. The first pig being killed was the first sign of evil. They celebrated the killings and became blood thirsty for hunting. It was human nature for the hunters and the little boys to follow Jack and to try to survive on the island. …show more content…

It is our parents’ job to teach good morals and values when we are young, but evil can not be fully covered up. The children enjoyed the freedom away from rules and adults. As time passes on the island their freedom soon turns into a nightmare and in the end some died. Civilization is not so far from savagery and everyone has some kind of evil lurking about. Even the little innocent British boys have a certain amount of evil in themselves. The kids are used to rules, but they soon realize that rules do not matter anymore. They can not be punished for throwing rocks or pushing a boulder and killing someone. Roger can not get into trouble by adults anymore, so his human nature kicks in and he reveals his evilness.     The only boy on the island that understands the truth about humans, tries to save them from their self-destruction. Throughout the book, Simon represents a Jesus-like figure. He helped Ralph with the shelters, handed ʻlittlunsʼ food and was very perceptive about the true meanings of the world. When the boys believed in the beast, he was the only one who knew the truth, ʻmaybe there is no beast . . . maybe itʼs only usʼ (Golding pg 111). Simonʼs death represents the idea that goodness is weaker than evil. The murder of Simon is the point of no return for civilisation on the island and shows that even decent people like Ralph and Piggy are capable of committing heinous crimes. His death unlike Jesus did not lead them to salvation but lead them to destruction and a deeper inner evil. After Simons death, Jack the leader of his tribe, became merciless and cruel. Jack often used other characters fears to control the people on the island. ʻMy hunters will protect you from the beastʼ (Golding pg 185). Jack is the first of the boys to succumb to his inner evil and become a savage. This is ironic because at the beginning of the novel he says, ʻWeʼve got to have rules and obey them. After all, weʼre not savages. Weʼre English.ʼ (Golding pg 55). He uses the fear and evil within all the characters to force them to follow under his dictatorship. Throughout the book Jack has a crazy obsession with hunting, the more times he kills the less civilised he would become. Jack is the one responsible for sending the boys on the island into this deep dark evil that they cannot seem to escape from. As Jack becomes more evil as the book progresses, Golding makes him the representation of the evil in every man. Lord of the Flies is a deep and meaningful novel, with a pessimistic view on human life.     In chapter 1, Jack was the leader of choirboys, when he and Ralph found a wild pig. Jack steps in and draws his knife but hesitates “He raised his arm in the air. There came a pause, a hiatus, the pig continued to scream and the creepers to jerk, and the blade continued to flash at the end of a bony arm... Then the piglet tore loose from the creepers and scurried into the undergrowth.... Jack’s face was white under the freckles. He noticed that he still held the knife aloft and brought his arm down replacing the blade in the sheath.” Jack started as a little boy who simply had jealousy over power. He was hesitated to kill the pig due to the fact that he had never killed any living creature. In another way, Jack was scared of blood, scared of killing, but as the story continued to go on, the jealous boy has changed. Jack becomes more violent, savage, and he is no longer Jack but a bloodthirsty hunter “Then he raised his spear and sneaked forward. Beyond the creeper, the trail joined a pig-run that was wide enough and trodden enough to be a path... He swung back his right arm and hurled the spear with all his strength. From the pig-run came the quick, hard patter of hoofs, a castanet sound, seductive, maddening-the promise of meat…” (Golding 47).     In the midst of danger, one will make irrational decisions. On the island, the boys are faced with many types of fears. Once the boys hear that there is a “beastie” on the island, one of Jack’s first ideas is to hunt it down. When Ralph doesn’t agree that they should be out searching for the beast, conflicts arise among Jack and Ralph which result in the separation of group. Without Ralph and Piggy, Jack’s group eventually turn to savages and do as they please, not feeling guilty or caring for a thing that happens.     When a group of boys are left stranded on a deserted island, there are no adults around and the true nature of the boys begins to show. “The hunters’ thoughts were crowded with memories, of the knowledge, that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away its life like a long satisfying drink” (Golding 63). When there were adults around in the world restrictions were placed on the boys, almost like a censorship. If a boy did something that “broke the rules” then he would be in trouble. But with the adults gone the boys could become their natural born state of savages. Adults could modify the human nature of the boys to a certain extent. Though what they learned in the real world was not all for broke. It is just there is the so called beast in every one of us and there is nothing we can do about it.
