Netflix’s idea was excellent. They had the idea to offer consumers a reasonably low flat fee to rent unlimited amount of DVDs. As fast as a customer could watch a movie and mail it back, the customer would receive another from their rental queue. The customer pays their money and they end up saving a lot on rental fees because they are promised new movies within a day of the delivery of the movie that they returned in a pre-paid envelope. One of the reasons that Netflix has been able to maintain their competitive advantage is the due to many people have already chosen Netflix as their online movie rental choice and it would be very hard for a new comer to take Netflix's business. It would also be very hard to offer the same choices at the same price, and a lower price. Another reason that Netflix can sustain its competitive advantage is due to the theory of first-mover advantage.…

What is Netflix’s strategy in the on-line movie rental market? What are Netflix’s sources of competitive advantage? Identify the competences key to the success of Netflix’s strategy and explain why. Netflix was a late entrant to the movie rental market and it was a first mover in the on – line movie rental market. Netflix’s strategy in the movie rental market is differentiation from traditional movie rental stores. Instead of attracting customers to a retail location, Netflix offered home delivery of DVDs through the mail. Why only DVDs? In 1998, most available movies were in VHS cassette format but Netflix concentrated on using only DVDs because its marketing strategy was to develop cross promotional programs with the manufacturers and sellers of DVD players, providing a source of content for the customers. Longer term factors that Netflix could should consider include the growing technological influence that cable wields. This means Video on Demand (or VOD) where customers can watch movies from their home at the click of a button. Netflix is excellently positioned to take advantage of this opportunity with a huge database of movies that could be put into the digital format. This provides another opportunity over the brick and mortar stores of the past. Not focusing on this area, or overlooking it, is a threat. Other threats include other entertainment providers offering movies/services similar to theirs in a more efficient or progressive manner, thus maintaining the need for Netflix to stay ahead of the curve as they did with their original business…
