“Understanding Human Sexuality” – SOC 2003

Personal Journal 1 – 2015W
Due by 4:00 pm February 25th , 2015.

I do not accept assignments late, nor do I accept journals via email.

You are to respond honestly and completely to each of the questions in the journal. It is important that I will be able to understand your point of view on each and every question - so short 'Yes' or 'No' responses will not suffice. ( Place your response in the ‘Answer’ section indicated.) Give examples and details to support your responses.

Only disclose within the bounds of your personal comfort level, and rest assured that I am the only person who has access to your comments.
If you do not understand a question, contact me for clarification prior to the deadline.

I STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT leave this assignment to the last minute - as this journal exercise is a very important tool in your semester exploration of understanding human sexuality.

Chapter 1 What is Human Sexuality?

1) Were you surprised to read the correct answers to the questions you answered in Quiz 1? Was terminology an issue?
Answer: I was surprised with my results in the first quiz. I don’t consider myself an expert in the area of human sexuality, however I thought that most answers could be predicted using common sense and it appears sometimes that is not the case. Terminology was an issue when it came to the anatomy of the body. Sex Ed classes in high school do not go very in depth about the reproductive organs so most terms are foreign to me. Statistics are also very surprising and contrary to what I originally would have guessed.
2) Web Site Question: Are humans really just sophisticated animals when it comes to sexual relations?
Answer: Yes, I believe human are just sophisticated animals when it comes to sex. Although research is still in developmental stages, animal behaviour demonstrates them doing exactly what humans do in regards to sex, masturbation and

The issue of slavery in America is a vastly documented phenomenon that captivates the interest of nearly everyone with a slight interest in history. It is a dark and fascinating subject yet still an overlooked part of our young nation’s history. Though there are countless books and articles written on the topic, few provide such compelling and brutally truthful accounts of the hardships endured by slaves as Harriett Jacobs in Incidents of a Slave Girl. Within this novel, she attempts to describe her situation under the laws dictating her life as a slave. She writes as to persuade the reader not to judge her as she tells them all she has bared in her life. As a young girl when she became a slave, she was subject to harassment, particularly by sexual means, more so than her male equals. Through the course of her book, Jacobs describes her predicament and attempts to survive and surpass it.…

Many conversations have formed and developed from the topic of sexuality by many different types of individuals. The truth being ones sexuality is not truly developed until that individual is completely mature. This means we never truly find complete satisfaction within our sexuality. There are many experiences in life that can alter ones sexual development and behavior such as upbringing, religion, or ones culture. In this paper I will discuss three scenarios, all of them experiencing their own unique phase of life dealing with different stages of sexuality. I am pretending to be a therapist, and I am listing to each or the patient’s perspectives and stories. Hopefully by doing so I will be able to come up with a conclusion to why they are faced with what they are facing. I also would like to help each individual form a healthy wise decision, as well as ways to overcome the obstacle that are currently presented in their lives by expressing their sexuality. Each problem every individual in every situation is dealing with a sexual problem that is why discussing their sexuality will help me in aiding their problems.…

Both men and women seemed to follow the traditional sexual script – where men would pursue the women, and women would first wait to be chased and then decide if having sex was an option or not. Another pattern was that men indicated that woman were responsible for performing oral sex. In this study, the results showed that men would accept oral sex, or ask for it with non-verbal or verbal cues, and then in turn…

Teresita went to a fraternity party because she'd heard that this fraternity "really knew how to have fun" and she really needed fun after a disastrous academic week. She knew that some women had been taken advantage of at previous parties, but she put that out of her mind, as she downed one drink after another. Just when things were getting dull, the coolest guy on campus took her by the hand, led her upstairs and talked her into having sex. The next day, Teresita noticed that her vagina was bruised and bleeding. She barely recalled having sex, but knew who was responsible for her condition, and filed rape charges against him with the campus administrator.…

In comparison to other species, the human approach toward sexual selection is remarkably distinct. Humans are the most intelligent species on earth, and have differed from our previous animalistic ancestors through a comprehensive verbal communication system and an ever-advancing global civilization. Additionally, humans vastly enjoy sex, having developed methods of contraception in order to have sex without the result of creating new life. This is quite counterintuitive to the theory of evolution as the purpose of sex is to reproduce and pass on genes with the goal of expanding the population. Nonetheless, the human style of sexual selection is unique and fascinating as we strive to select and attract partners using three distinct methods: physical (phenotypic) attractiveness, personal connectedness, and resource successfulness.…
