The purpose of sexual exploitation includes pornography, prostitution, and forced sexual servitude. Women and young girls are the typical victims, but men and boys are not excluded. In a report by Jane V. Appleton she argued that although the victims continue to be female, offending is more masculine with young men being more likely to be offenders (10). Women in underdeveloped countries tend to be more vulnerable to sex trafficking due to the fact that they are not valued and they need work. This is where traffickers use false advertisements such as educational promises, well-paying jobs, or even marriages. Children who are also trafficked are usually sold by their parents to pay a debt or gain money. As a special representative of the United Nations Secretary General for children’s rights, Marta Santos Pais writes, “Sexual violence, abuse, and exploitation have dramatic and lasting impacts on children’s physical and emotional health, development and education, and on opportunities to participate in social life.” Not only does this type of abuse affect children, it affects adults as well. Mental health services conducted a study on victims of human trafficking where they found more than half of the victims suffered from mental health issues due to human trafficking (Domoney). Mental health and health issues regarding trafficked victims include depression, anxiety, emotional stress, sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. These affects will turn victims to drugs and alcohol and often use them to help cope.
