PRE-AMERICAN CONDITIONS IN PHILIPPINE PAINTING: A BACKGROUNDER Colonial art in the Philippines should be looked into as a cultural form using one main trajectory: the local society’s political economy. The cultural experiences and history of the Filipinos during the Spanish period must be considered in relation to the “confusion” of our identity towards the translation of our uniqueness, or say, character or distinctive imagery to the different art forms. The early art schools which introduced painting in the Philippines were brought by the Spanish religious missions and became the locus of some sort in the history of early art making in the islands.
Paintings applied on plastered walls and ceilings
Fresco (plural frescos or frescoes) is a technique of mural painting executed upon freshly-laid, or wet lime plaster. Water is used as the vehicle for the pigment to merge with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall. The word fresco (Italian: affresco) is derived from the Italian adjective fresco meaning "fresh", and may thus be contrasted with fresco-secco or secco mural painting techniques, which are applied to dried plaster, to supplement painting in fresco. The fresco technique has been employed since antiquity and is closely associated with Italian Renaissance painting.
Plasterwork refers to construction or ornamentation done with plaster, such as a layer of plaster on an interior or exterior wall structure, or plaster d ecorative moldings on ceilings or walls. This is also sometimes called pargeting. The process of creating plasterwork, called plastering, has been used in building construction for centuries.
A mural is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other large permanent surface. A distinguishing characteristic of mural painting is that the architectural elements of the given space are harmoniously incorporated into the picture.

Roman's most influential contribution to society has been showed throughout the history and culture of art. Although many characteristics of Roman art have been adopted from the art world of the Etruscans, the Romans' have also had their own unique contributions. One of the most influential contributions that the Romans had on the history of art was their “ability to assimilate ideas and customs from the cultures and societies which they encountered.” (Giovanni Milani-Santarpia) Frescoes, a painting done using watercolor on wet plaster on a wall or ceiling, was a major contribution to artistic world. Frescoes influenced artists to focus more on the landscapes and its features instead of people and figures in their paintings. It also encouraged the artists to paint other things aside from people such as scenery and architectural scenes. Doing so helped artists to give their supporters more of an atmospheric perspective on the world and lessen the focus on people. In an attempt to giving their fresco paintings to life, the artists would apply a pigment mixed with lime directly to the wall while it was still moist. (Giovanni Milani-Santarpia) Murals was another form of art that the Romans helped being into various branches of art. Murals were an idea that came indirectly from the previous Roman creation, frescos. A mural is a piece of art that is painted directly on a wall. Then there are mosaics, which is an art form where you create an image using tiny pieces of colored stone, class, and other materials. It…

While reading Three articles concerning the collapse of the maya civilization, I read about debates why the civilization fell apart. Ancient Mayan empire was approximately A.D 250 to A.D 900. The mayan Civilization once extended through out the area of Texas, southern Mexico, and Northern Central America, This includes the countries of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. The mayans was a very advanced civilization they had a break through in astronomy which helped them predict where the moon and planets would lay in the sky. The mayans left behind stone inscriptions and books regarding their gods, which taught us a lot about the mayan empire. A common reason the empire collapsed was drought which stopped the mayans from agriculture, and many more examples of the falling of the empire.…
