Humanity In The Movie Unlocking

In my opinion, a person is someone who has an ability to feel, is conscious about where he is and what he does and understands the outcomes of his actions. As Steven Wise in the movie Unlocking the Cage says, in order to be a person, one does not necessarily have to be human. I completely agree with this statement and I believe that’s the greatest problem because it’s a common belief that only people can be person’s. Very often such people, who believe that personality is strictly human feature, justify this statement by saying that animals do not have an ability to reason, are not aware of themselves and don’t have preferences in the way they live. In the movie Unlocking the Cage this statement is justified to be false. For example, a chimpanzee that is caged is well aware of the fact that she is caged and knows that she will still be in the cage the next day.
This can be proven by the deaths of chimpanzees Reba, Marlin and Charlie, who all suddenly die within 7 months period because of the captivity. This shows that chimpanzees definitely have preferences in life. In addition, there was a scene in a movie that surprised me where a chimp Kanzi tries to take off the shoe of the person’s feet and did not succeed to do that in the beginning, but when the person orally suggested Kanzi to try untying the shoe, she did it right away and removed it. This is just one of the many proofs that chimpanzees are conscious what they are doing and have an ability to understand us. For these reasons, I believe that chimpanzees should be granted a personhood status, because humans and chimpanzees share so many similar features.
