Hung Liu deserves to be honored as a great artist that can be categorized as a successful person that has going through the test, hardships, throughout her career as an artist. She has become, somewhat, a person who continuously moving to inspire other artist and people to pursue their dreams persistently regardless the hindrance in front of them.
Hung Liu was born in Chanchun, Manchuriam Northeastern China, in February 17, 1948, which is 3 years after the World War II. If most of old photographs were blurry and vague, her photographs were, fortunately, clear, and show the citizen of China’s desperation and harrowing past during Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Hence, Liu was trying to convey her nationalism as a Chinese people who were desperately living in a miserable life during the revolution. In my opinion, Liu is trying to pour in her mind and feelings during the revolution that affect her surroundings such as her family and education. Not only that she lost her father, but she was also tucked away in the countryside for years, could not gain the equity of a proper education, and survived in different kinds of states in her life from time to time; for example, her survival from rural area to cities and socializing with low-paid workers to high-paid society. Furthermore, she was trying to be the representative of people who suffer the same experience. During the Mao’s revolution, she witnessed a civil rights group movement called “Red Guard”, where they are trying to stop Mao’s revolution, which causes riots between two parties and led to a huge slope of economic growth in China. Imagining Liu’s life, I adore her adapting ability in surviving each era differently, and preserve her desire from time to time.
