hunger games
Over the long hot summer I read an interesting book written by Suzanne Collins called The Hunger Games. It is an inspirational book about a small district in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem in North America. The Hunger Games is an annual lottery in which one boy and one girl aged 12–18 from each of the twelve districts are selected to compete in a live televised battle to the death. This is an underdog story of Katniss Everdeen who is from district 12 a coal-mining district that is the poorest and least populated district. She is able to come out victorious and find her love Peeta Mellark who is also from district 12. This story shows people our age that even through adversity if you work hard enough you can do anything you want to. Katniss faced much adversity in her life from her father dying in a mine accident, her having to find food so her and her sister did not starve, and her taking the place of her sister when she is picked to take place in the hunger games. This relates to a lot of people because we face challenges in everyday life, but like Katniss we must be able to overcome these challenges and make the best of it. Katniss also showed a lot of bravery by taking the places of her sister in The Hunger Games this act of bravery is something that many people would not do. If you want to be brave in your life you must be able to sacrifice yourself for another person this is another reason why I believe this book related to so many people. I personally enjoyed this underdog story. The fact that the least likely winner of the games came out the winner makes the story great to me. I admire the bravery of Katniss for putting her life in danger to save her sister who I believe would have not survived the games.
Another reason I like this book is because of the action and the fact that you must kill someone that might be your friend. It shows the desperation of people and how they fight to survive. As I read the book my opinion of Peeta change by at

The theme of this book is the same as 9 others in this Anthology project. I say this because Katniss stood up for her sister. She could’ve let Prim go and die in the Games. But no… Instead, she “Volunteered as Tribute” Through this she was able to help her because she was willing to stand up to do it. If she hadn’t of had the courage to do it and survive in the games, Prim probably would’ve died.…

For my independent novel study, I have decided to use Suzanne Collin’s Novel the Hunger Games; a story set around a teenaged girl’s firsthand account of gladiator-like sports in a post-apocalyptic era where North America once stood. The book creates a mood or sense of suspense and hope for Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist who has to fight for survival in the Hunger Games. This reminds me of and relates to the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Where in his novel, a group of boys are found stranded on an island in the middle of nowhere and must fight for their survival as well as hope to be rescued. Katniss, just like the boys, finds herself trapped in an arena with other tributes, but instead of joining up with them she must fight them to the death in order to survive. She also has hope for her family. That her mother and younger sister Prim are surviving without her being able to care for them by hunting and providing them with a proper meal.…

Katniss is quite resourceful. One example of her cleverly using her resources is when she hunts animals with her bow and trades them in the black market of District 12. “We easily trade the six of the fish we caught for good bread, and the other two for salt.” Another reason that I like the protagonist is because she is very selfless and courageous. She was being very courageous and selfless when she volunteered as tribute after her sister’s name got called. “‘I volunteer’ I gasped ‘I volunteer as…

Katniss Everdeen is a teenager living in District 12. There used to be 13 districts but the 13th tried to start a riot and it got toxic-ally bombed by the government. The book is set many years ahead in what is perceived to be future America. Every year The Hunger Games is hosted to remind the districts how easy the government can destroy them and to remind them of what happened. Two contestants from each District are pitted against all of the others and stuck in a dome where they will fight to the death. Whoever is the last standing wins and gets a new home and everything they've always wanted. Katniss' father died when she was young, and since then she has been the leader of her family of three [mom, her, and sister]. Then, on the day of the drawing Katniss' sister is chosen, but instead Katniss volunteers in her place. For the boys, a guy named Peeta is chosen Katniss soon realizes that Peeta did a good deed for her when her dad died, he gave her two loaves of slightly baked bread for her and her family [even though his mother slapped him for it]. Then they are taken to the City called the Capitol and they are trained and mentored. Then, they are pitted in the dome. Katniss and Peeta pretend to fall in love. Peeta is really in love with her even though Katniss isn't sure. At one point an announcer says that if there are still two people left from the same district they can win. At the end, Katniss and Peeta are both left when the announcer changes what he said, only one can win. Katniss gets an idea. She picks some poison berries and her and Peeta almost eat them. Then the announcer says that they both can win. When they get back to where they were first trained, Katniss says that she was just playing the part. Peeta gets angry and basically gives her the cold shoulder most of the time. Then in the very end he says "one last time for the cameras" and they hold hands. The Hunger Games covers a period of about two or three weeks. The…

Katniss Everdeen (the main character) is a teenage girl who lives in an impoverished coal-mining region in the country of Panem. She showed no fear when she took her sister’s place as tribute as she knew that she had made the morally correct decision. After her father sadly perished in a tragic mining explosion, she learned to fill her father’s shoes as her mother was in no state to support her family. It was Katniss’s strong-willed mindset that got her and her family through those though times. Although she continually displays her traits throughout the novel, she does learn some new values that aid her whilst in the Hunger Games arena. She becomes tactically aware and learns not to trust people as she is in a kill or be killed environment. The main value that made me feel strongly about Katniss was her determination to get things done. Growing up in harsh conditions, “where you can starve to death in safety” taught Katniss to rebel against the rules in order for the survival of herself and her family. With no father and very little income from her mother, there would be numerous nights where her family would have to go to sleep with an empty stomach. Fortunately, Katniss, an experienced Archer could hunt game to either sell or eat. She was the wax that kept her family’s candle of life burning. “It was slow-going at first, but I was determined to feed us. I stole eggs from nests, caught fish in nets, sometimes managed to shoot a squirrel or rabbit for stew…I kept us alive”. In her modest self, she would say that she is ‘average’ at archery, however she is truly…

Katniss plays the most important role in the novel. She’s a very mature young teenager. First of all, she had to take the role of her father as a provider and as a guardian. Secondly, she can’t trust anyone because she lives in poverty, and people in her District would do anything to get food. Thirdly, she’s very brave when she goes into the woods even though she’s not allowed to go there, because it goes against the rules and she could be punished by the Capitol. Finally, she’s not…
