Everyone has heard the saying that winning is not everything. In Suzanne Collin’s bestseller, The Hunger Games, it redefines that saying. In the novel, North America has been through some apocalyptic disasters and is known as Panam with twelve districts that are ruled by the Capitol. Each year the Hunger Games are held as a reminder of the bleak past and that the Capitol is still in control of the citizens of Panam. One girl and one boy between the ages twelve and eighteen from each district are drafted to fight to death in the Hunger Games. The last one standing is the winner and will bring home the fame and fortune for their district. Each kid must attend “The Reaping”, which is the ceremony where the names are drawn for the person to be in the Hunger Games. Primrose Everdeen is only twelve years old and this is her first year attending “The Reaping”. Her sister, Katniss Everdeen, assures her that she’s not going to be picked because her name is only in the drawing once. Surprisingly, the odds were not in Primrose’s favor. Katniss cannot stand to see her little sister go and fend for herself in the Hunger Games, so she does the unthinkable and volunteers to take Primrose’s place as tribute, a person who competes in the Hunger Games. Peeta Mellark is the male tribute chosen to represent District 12 in the Hunger Games. Peeta has had an everlasting crush on Katniss since the day they met. Will Katniss have mutual feelings with Peeta during this crucial time of life or death or will the love be a distraction while it boils in the heart? Also, will the beloved characters perish or will they prevail in the Hunger Games? The Hunger Games is a compelling young adult novel that will surely appeal to many readers that admire action and adventure with a hint of romance. In my opinion, The Hunger Games is an exceptional novel that is dramatic and really fun to read. The author, Suzanne Collins, does a really good job with developing the plot.     Summary: We travel towards the future in the Post-Apocalyptic nation Panem which is the remains of the old United States of America. Our main character and heroine Katniss Everdeen lives with her younger sister Primrose and widowed mother. The nation is divided into 12 districts, a severed District 13, and a capitol which hold Panem's tyrants. Katniss lives in District 12 known for it's mining, and despite going to high school , Katniss and her old guy-friend Gale Hawthorne hunt illegally to supply for their families and the black market. The 74th Annual Hunger Games has approached and a male and female between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the Capitol's Game in remembering the great war when all the districts defied them. To show they are still superior over them, the Capitol has placed an all-out war zone for everyone's entertainment each year. On the day of the drawing for tributes, Effie Trinket pulls the name Primrose despite their being hundreds of names in the drawing, Katniss however sacrifices herself in her sister's place along with Peeta Melark who was chosen to represent the guys. As they board the train to the Capitol, Katniss and Peeta meet and learn from their half-drunken mentor Haymitch Abernathy, coordinator Effie Trinket, and later . When Katniss finally reaches the Capitol, Peeta admits an unrequitted love for during the introductory show for all the tributes. This stirs up some tension and strife making the couple “Star-Crossed Lovers”. Finally we get into the battleground where swords, knieves, and arrows are flying everwhere! Katniss hides in trees constantly, almost gets blown up, and almost burned to death. She eventually find Peeta who is disguised in Mud hiding from the other tributes since he had hurt his leg from saving Katniss from Cato(a large/muscular/big District 2 tribute).     The first two books are extremely well-written, dramatic novels that grab your attention and don’t let go. The characters are described with such vividity that you see a real person, with real emotions and feelings. Not only the characters, but the whole Hunger Games universe is described with such a realism you can picture yourself in the storyline. The plot, until the third book, has beautiful twists and turns, smaller stories within the story itself, and a great deal of excitement. The Hunger Games trilogy will make you feel the emotions the characters feel. While reading you hurt with Katniss when Rue dies, you feel elated when Peeta and Katniss both survive their first Hunger Games, and you are angry at the injustice of The Capitol.
