In the beginning of the story, Katniss is explaining to readers about her home and what she does is District 12, then she starts to tell readers about her hunting and she explains, “I only have to pass a few gates to reach the scruffy field called the Meadow. Separating the Meadow from the woods, in fact enclosing all of District 12, is a high chain-link fence topped with barbed-wire loops” (Collins 4). Having District 12 have a large fence around it with barbed-wire on the top of it shows the authority is very controlling. The authority being very controlling helps show that a problem is that people are afraid to speak up and do not take action. This is shown because with strong authority people tend to follow directions and not be an individual and speak about things they think are wrong with society. Right before Effie Trinket draws the names of the tributes for the Hunger Games the mayor talks about the history of Panem and how the Hunger Games came about the reader learns, “Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated. The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace…”(Collins 18). Right after Prim’s name gets drawn during the reaping Katniss says, “‘I volunteer!’ I gasp. ‘I volunteer as tribute’”(Collins 22 ). Katniss volunteering for the Hunger Games shows she is having an experience that opens her eyes to the problem in society. Her volunteering for the games allows her to have an eye opening experience because she is seeing the corruption of the Capitol in person. This helps by showing her what is wrong with the society and making her want to fight and fix the problem. When Katniss is teaching the readers about the woods her and Gale go to to hunt in outside of District 12, she explains to readers, “Even though trespassing in the woods is illegal and poaching carries the severest of penalties, more people would do it if they had weapons (Collins 5). When Katniss is explaining that hunting is illegal it shows she is different than the rest of the people in Panem. Her feeling like she does not fit in leads her to feel like an outsider. Feeling like an outsider shows her the problems in society. Her knowing the problems in society help her fix them. Right at the end of the Hunger Games when Katniss is thinking about what to do so her and Peeta both live she thinks, “Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers’ faces. They’d have failed the Capitol… If Peeta and I were both to die, or
