Hunting And Gathering
Why Agriculture is better than Hunting and Gathering

INTRODUCTION
Thesis Statement: I believe that Jared Diamond’s statement about how Agriculture was the worst mistake in the history of the human race is wrong. I. “I believe in the future of agriculture with a faith born not of words but of deeds--achievements won by the present and past generations of agriculturists; in the promise of better days through better ways, even as the better things we now enjoy have come to us from the struggles of former years (https://www.ffa.org/documents/creed.pdf).” The FFA creed shows that agriculture is the promise of better days through better ways. I believe that Jared Diamond’s statement about how Agriculture was the worst mistake in the history

I found Mark Bittman's Tedtalk, What's wrong with what we eat talk to be somewhat educational, but also misleading at the same time especially when it came to agriculture. It is true that humans are over eating especially when it comes to meat, but that is because we're no longer cavemen who need to go out and hunt for our meals but instead, we can go to the grocery store or a restaurant to get anything we desire. Thus I believe that added convince is what is adding to the obesity epidemic, not the agriculture industry. One thing that I felt was semi-true was that yes agriculture production is the second most polluter in the US, but only about 2% of the United States population are farmers, and that 2% strongly cares about the environment especially…

Similar to Zuk’s book Paleofantasy: What Evolution Really Tells Us about Sex, Diet, and How We Live, Oeschlaeger discusses agriculture and how it has impacted humans and society. In this text, Oeschlaeger discusses the impacts of agriculture from a historic and religious perspective. There is a common theme found throughout this text: agriculture and religion are interconnected. The concept of a linear timeline is a prominent concept when Oeschlaeger elaborates on this interconnectedness. The author states that this linear interconnectedness of agriculture and religion has impacted current perceptions of nature.…

Not only this, but “the farmers profit margin dropped from 35% in the 1950 's to about 9% today.” (Mckibben, 54) This means that “to generate the same income as it did in 1950, a farm today would need to be roughly four times as large.” (Mckibben, 55) As a result of this perpetual growth and centralization, problems like “huge sewage lagoons, miserable animals, vulnerability to sabotage and food-born illness”(mckibben, 61) have become commonplace. Not only this, but “we are running out of the two basic ingredients we need to grow food on an industrial scale: oil and water.” (Mckibben, 62) The situation has become so dire that “we are now facing a near simultaneous depletion of the underground aquifers which have been responsible for the unsustainable, artificial inflation of food production.” At this point of realization, Mckibben begins indulging the reader in a large number of facts that promote a more localized form of farming as the solution to a seemingly endless number of issues. Initially the point is raised that “sustainable agriculture leads to a 93% increase in per-hectare food production.” (Mckibben, 68) The next idea raised is that, “since World War 1, it has been cheaper to use…

Jared Diamond is a scientist and is the author of “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race.” The article isn’t the clearest on what could be better. Would the human race have been better off living with the need to hunt and gather for their life, or would agriculture be the key to the survival for the human race? Jared believes moving back to a hunting/gathering lifestyle would be beneficiary to us. I believe Jared Diamond makes some great points, but that agriculture was a necessity for what we’ve accomplished.…

Jared Diamond makes a compelling case for why “the adoption of agriculture was in many ways a catastrophe” in his 1987 Discover Magazine article “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race,” however I am not convinced. An Agricultural Revolution is a “significant change in agriculture that occurs when there are discoveries, inventions, or new technologies that change production” (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 2015) and the development of agriculture has been a fundamental part of the march of civilization. The Agricultural Revolution was not a catastrophe from which we have never recovered, it was the groundwork for the rise of civilization. Cynthia Stokes Brown, author of Big History- From The Big Bang To The Present states…

When technological advancements gave possibility to mass production, also called Fordism, the American agriculture system has ushered in a new era of rationality and standardization in production. In a profit-driven and efficiency-oriented, farming was gradually getting mechanical, chemical, and biotechnological. In addition to delivering the knowledge and techniques to farms, economists found “it was necessary to decontextualized the farm enterprise from the community and household setting in which it was embedded” (Lyson, 2004). There used to be mostly family labor in family farming. In order to overcome the problems in labor division and transform farming into a fully functional assembly line, social relations must be separate from the production and viewed as “externalities”. Thanks to three agricultural revolutions, in late twentieth century an increase in production can be finished with less labor as well as less…

Through careful sociological studies, one can see that the impact of agriculture is beneficial to life. In the article “The Worst Mistake of the Human Race” by Jared Diamond, he argues that agriculture “was in many ways a catastrophe” and “with agriculture came the gross social and sexual inequality, the disease and despotism, that curse our existence.” Although this may be somewhat true, many would disagree. Agriculture doesn’t lead to inequality nor diseases. The differences between humans lead to inequality and poor agriculture leads to diseases. Differences between humans such as their sex and what they are capable of doing leads to inequality, not agriculture. Poor agriculture such as using urine to water plants creates and spreads…

In Jared Diamond's article "The Worst Mistake in Human History," he describes the adoption of agriculture as a catastrophy. At first mention, this sounds rediculous. How could one of our greatest advancements possibly be regaurded as the worst mistake in human history? It encouarged civilization and made food easier to come back. Surely this porgession was not catastrophic.…

One theory in Jared Diamond s Collapse is that soil degradation and erosion leads to insufficient agriculture and a society s demise. In Timothy Egan s The Worst Hard Time, he sets forth in specific and excruciating detail exactly what Diamond outlines in Collapse. Only Egan s book isn t theoretical. It isn t a survey of what s happened in other countries. It s about the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. It s about what happens, right here in the heart of America, when the land is misused, mistreated, and turns on those who depend on it.…

It is not acceptable that women are portrayed in the media as dominantly dependent on men. The television and movie industry have only recently started to portray women as strong, and independent and only in a select number of roles. Only a hand-full of the media depicts women as independent. A few that come to mind are Gilmore Girls, Revenge, Frozen, and Brave. It is unethical that this has just started changing and that there are only limited amounts of media portraying positive depictions of women. Instead girls have to grow up watching negative stereotypes about women and think that this is the right way to become a woman.…

On November 15th of 2003, my life changed forever at 5:15 in the afternoon. It was a cool crisp evening and the wonderful smell of nature was around me. I was sitting about 20 feet off the ground and being 9 years old that was a really long ways to me. All of a sudden a rustle of the leaves, a sound I thought I would never hear, finally happened. This was my very first experience in a deer stand.…
