Abstract
Hurricane Katrina was one of the most deadliest hurricanes to affect the United States. The hurricane killed at least one thousand people and caused at least one hundred billion dollars in damage. The physical damage and the countless number of lives lost are typically all that is reflected upon when discussing Hurricane Katrina but the mental health effects of this devastating hurricane are also important to consider. In addition to its devastating physical affects, Hurricane Katrina has affected many mentally. Children who were affected by the hurricane also displayed signs of psychological effects. Post-traumatic stress has been worse for children which led to severe emotional disturbance, or SED. Post-traumatic stress disorder along with severe emotional disturbance is said to have led to behavioral and emotional issues that made it difficult for children to function within their families, at school, or in the community. This can often led to suicidal thoughts. This paper will focus on the mental and emotional effects that Hurricane Katrina had on the survivors of the deadly storm. It was a category 3 hurricane and one of the most deadliest hurricanes to ever hit the United States. The hurricane took the lives of at least 1245 people. It also caused approximately 308 billion dollars worth of damage. The mental and emotional effects of Hurricane Katrina are not often discussed but are extremely relevant as they have led to suicidal inclinations and behavioral and emotional issues within the surviving population. These mental and emotional issues affected not only adults but may also have a more dramatic effect on children. Being directly affected by Hurricane Katrina has led to post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, severe emotional disturbance, SED, and depression. These very serious and overwhelming mental and emotional disorders can and have led to suicide. When these mental and emotional disorders are present in children, it often makes it difficult for them to function properly within their families, at school, or within the
