Jack London highlights the most significant examples that he uses to describe life in an extreme Arctic environment and show how it shapes the villagers life in the freezing cold weather. First, he discusses the setting as,” when the north gales make their long sweep across the icepack, and the air is filled with flying white, no man may venture forth…. For each winter the sun leaves the land in darkness”. This shows that the villagers are living a dangerous lifestyle. One of the details to show that their living in a harsh environment is the cloth they wear. The villagers wear heave cloth for them to be warm. Also, that the villagers can’t go outside because the weather conditions are very bad. It said in the quote “on man may venture forth. Second, another evidence from the text is that in pg 61 it says” the father of Keesh had been a very brave man, but he had met his death in a time of famine, when he sought to save the lives of his people by taking the life of a great polar bear. In his eagerness he came to close grapples with the bear, and his bones were crushed, but the bear had much meat on him and the people were saved. This shows that hunting is a dangerous job. The villagers only rely on hunters to provide them with food. Without successful hunters there will be no meat for the villagers and they will starve to death. To add on, “and let it be known now, that the division of that which I kill shall be fair. And no widow nor weak one shall cry in the night because there is no meat”. This quote comes from pg 64. First, this show how the people lived before Keesh started ever hunting. The villagers and Keesh’s mother had a little bit of meat because the hunters were doing a bad job
