(Illness Anxiety Disorder)
Definition
Also known as hypochondria, hypochondriasis is a disorder that leads an individual to believe they are very ill when nothing is wrong. Even when medical exams show no serious illness is present, the individual still continues to believe they have a life threatening illness.
Causes
• Bellieved to be caused by deficient neurotransmitters and decreased tolerance for physical pain
Risk factors
• Extreme stress
• Severe symptom that could threaten health
• Childhood abuse
• Illness during childhood
• Mental disorders
