When I was little I didn't think much of it but now I see how it helped me. In a way Happy to be Nappy by Bell Hooks and Chris Raschka taught me self love. Happy to be Nappy had all types of black hair in it; Short, long, twisted, braided, every natural hair style you can think of and that's what I liked about it. I remember when I learned to read I felt like I could do anything. One of the first books I learned to read was Are You My Mother? by P.D Eastman. I read this book everynight with my mother before bed. I'm not sure exactly what impact this book had on my life but I know that in a way it made me appreciate my mom more. The bird in the story asked every animal if they were his mother and they said no but then he found her, another bird just like him, just for him.
