Her certificate and report cards are just as valuable as jewelry. 6 years later her and Aunt Baba look through the report cards in safe deposit box. Aunt Baba tells Adeline, “With such exceptional grades, you’ll be able to become anybody you want. Let this be your secret weapon, your talisman, your magic charm that will bring you all the riches you could ever wish for. One day, the world will recognize your talent.” (Pg. 121) Here, Aunt Baba explains why Adeline's good grades are so special. She believes that Adeline will be successful if she gets good grades. Adeline was able to win the class election. This showed that Adeline’s classmates saw how good she was especially her best friend Wu Chun Mei. They even wanted to give her a surprise party. Adeline won the writing competition and father let her go to college in England. Father was so proud and told his coworker “I was so pleased to tell him you are my daughter. Well done!” (Pg. 192) This was one of the first times Father had said something nice to Adeline. Adeline finally got a chance to escape and start a new life. Adeline was skipping grades and finishing of the top of her class. Third Brother was starting to notice that Adeline was really smart. Her writing was fabulous and it helped her show her talent.
