Live your life the way it should be lived instead of dying from something when you could live to see 100. If you need help go and get it because it is never too late and you shouldn’t be embarrassed at the fact that you have a problem. Everyone has their flaws and all so therefore no one is perfect and no one will ever be. Go get help if you need it because your loved ones need you and you need you. Be a hero to someone one day by letting them know that if you did everything that you could to stop drinking and accomplished it then they can do it…
I feel that binge drinking happens a lot because of society and trying to fit in with peers. I know that people can drink responsibly, mostly everyone but there is a few that just want to get wasted. Parties or going out with friends is when binge drinking happens a lot because people like to take shots and they measure their fun with how drunk they can get. Like you mention this is when people start to make the wrong decision that can impact their life’s…

In “The Behavioral Genetics of Alcoholism” Matt McGue explains some of the people who are at a higher risk for alcoholism. “People who were reared in an environment where drinking was tolerated and encouraged, people suffering from a mental illness and people who are biologically related to an alcoholic” (McGue, 109). At times alcohol abuse appears to be uncontrollable and most often unexpected, no one believes they will someday fall victim to this disease, let alone will they allow their child, grandchild, or other beloved family member to do so. However most people resemble the characteristics of those who reared them and most often this is done completely subconsciously. When one of both parents drink on a regular basis this becomes the norm in the eyes of the children. If drinking is consistently done within the boundaries that one is confined to and if parents condone these poor habits it is most likely that these children will begin to believe…
Alcoholism not only affects others but worst of all harms you and your family. Most of the harm you are doing is to your organs. Even a sip of alcohol can last up to two hours inside your body system. Drinking comes with having various…
Among some tribes, the rates are as high as 1.5 to 2.5 per 1,000 live births” (FASDCE 2007). Aside from the health issues associated with heavy drinking, alcoholics also affects their surrounding families. Many family members feel ashamed, guilty, resentful and even hatred towards the alcoholic, such feels puts stress on the family. Family members may even resort to changing their own behavior to behave more like the alcoholic, which may turn them into an alcoholic as…
When Julia moved to Virginia three years ago, we immediately became best friends, and she eventually explained the reason for her move. Her mother was an alcoholic and was progressively becoming worse. She knew her mother was unfit to make healthy parental decisions, so she moved in with her father. It was not very long after Julia’s move that I met her mother. Despite what I knew about her, we instantly connected because she was a lot like my own mother; the only difference was that mine did not have a drinking problem.…
After reading and hearing about everyone’s experience with alcohol I decided to attend an AA meeting. I chose this for two reasons, one because I wanted to see if these meeting are effective and second because after hearing everyone’s stories I began to doubt myself. I consider myself a social drinker because I like to go out and party mostly every weekend. After learning so much about alcohol I started to wonder if I depended on it in order to have fun. Honestly it is quite scary to imagine that I could possibly be in the first stages of alcoholism. The biggest impact I had this semester was while watching the film where the mother hits her daughter because she is under the influence. My parents never did that too me so I do not think my future children should have to go through that either.…
Just by reading this, you have started to move in a more positive direction. The most important relationships we have in our lives are with our family members. It is possible to live with and love an alcoholic spouse, brother, sister, or child in great capacity. You will just need to continue in this direction of getting more interconnected with people who can help…
Binge drinking in college is a controversial issue that has impassioned many to write. Henry Wechsler, Froma Harrop, Kathryn Stewart, Corina Sole, and James C. Carter are several writers that have shared their opinions with the public, in hopes to influence society. Although these writers have expressed their concern on this matter, each has a distinct perspective upon the issue. At one end of the spectrum lies Wechsler’s article which was inspired by an unfortunate event – the death of an MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) freshman who died of alcohol poisoning. He claims that colleges are not acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, which should, since college students are ever so “incapable” of controlling their obnoxious…
This week I decided to do a reflection on an article about "Alcoholism" I read a few years back. Alcoholism, is a progressive illness involving excessive ingestion of alcohol. Alcoholism, as opposed to merely excessive or irresponsible drinking has been variously thought of as a symptom of psychological o social stress or as a learned behavior. More recently it has come to be viewed as a complex disease . Alcoholism develops over a period of years. A common symptom includes placing excessive importance on the availability of alcohol. Alcoholics have a high tolerance to alcohol, consuming more and showing less effects than others. Alcohol is a leading cause for death which causes nearly 4 percent of deaths worldwide, more than Aids, tuberculosis, or violence. Approximately 2.5 million people die each year from alcohol related causes. I also choose this topic because a week ago as you know, my father died in his sleep. He was an alcoholic for over 20 years, on and off trying to get sober. At times my father drank about 5 or 6 cups of rum and coke daily until he drank himself to death. What my father neglected to realize was alcoholism can lead to organ damage such as cirrhosis of the liver, epilepsy, or gastritis. Alcoholism is a disease, it sometimes is genetic and environmental factors have plenty to do with its development. An example in this case would be my grandmother, she drinks beer all through the day and ever since my father was little seeing this probably caused him to want to drink as well. Alcoholism's first stage is craving; a strong need for the drink. Second is a loss of control which is where you become unable to control or limit one's drinking. The third sage is physical dependence such as withdrawal symptoms. The fourth and final stage is tolerance, the need to drink cup after cup to achieve your high or buzz. Characteristics of severe physical dependence are cravings and…
Binge drinking is a major issue in the US today. Binge drinking for men is when you drink five or more drinks between two and three hours. For women it's four or more drinks in the same time span. Research shows that most of the 38 million Americans that admit to binge drinking drink even 8 drinks in the two to three hours. Alcohol poisoning can cause you to choke and loose your breath it can even cause you to die. Binge drinking is a serious and “critical health issue facing this nation”.…
According to recent studies alcoholism is a disease that affects not only the addicted person but it also affects their families as well. Many children who grow up in homes where one or both parents are alcoholics or abuse alcohol will in time need to have help in sorting out all of the issues associated with a parent or parents that abuse alcohol. Sometimes children of alcoholics are physically, sexually and emotionally abused. Even when there is no outward abuse the child growing up in an alcoholic family suffers damage. Once a parent is on the road to living in an addicted state the need to drink supersedes the ability to care for the child. The children become innocent bystanders unable to make sense of their world. These children may grow…
The significant and detrimental impact on family life and child development caused by parental alcohol use cannot be underestimated, often putting children in danger. Alcohol use and disorders are a major public health problem. Alcohol abuse in poor and deprived communities is particularly deleterious as the scarce financial resources of the family needed for food, health care, and education are diverted to alcohol. (Pinto, Violet) It rarely exists in isolation as a problem and is commonly intertwined with mental health, bereavement, family breakdown or domestic violence. Children are impacted in a number of different ways: parental alcoholism affects them financially; it affects their home environment; they may be exposed to unsuitable care and care givers or inadequate supervision, poor role models and inappropriate behavior; and their physical/emotional development and school attendance can suffer. Many children whose parents drink at a significant level can often find themselves having to take on the role of care giver, both for their siblings and their parents. Approximately 5-10% of the country's population suffers from DSM-IV alcohol abuse, and this figure appears to be growing. Alcohol use problems affect spouses and children, unfortunately, in addition to the heavy substance users themselves. A recent study estimated that one in four American children have a parent who meets criteria for DSM-IV alcohol abuse. (Brennan, Patricia)…
