“I have tons of regrets, but I think that’s one of the reasons that push people to create things. Out of their angst, their regret comes the best from artists, painters, and writers” (Sylvester Stallone). Regret is a feeling of sorrow or unhappiness, often mixed with (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English). Many of us have been through difficult times and went through experiences that we wish we could re do. Should we stress over the experiences or take it as a learning experience? So the question is, regret: a curse or a learning experience?
Since the theme of our paper is regret, one of the songs we chose is “Just a Dream” by Nelly. “I was at the top and now it's like I'm in the basement,” tells us the tone of the …show more content…
song is melancholy. “I was thinking 'bout her/ thinking 'bout me/ thinking 'bout us/ what we gon' be/ open my eyes yeah, it was only just a dream,” explains the title of the song perfectly. The person in this song is in denial because he keeps thinking about him and his girlfriend, but subconsciously knows they are broken up. “And now you ain't around baby I can't think, I should've put it down, should've got the ring,” shows the regret of this person. “Didn't give her all my love, I guess now I got my payback,” says he knows he could have done more to make her feel loved. The overall story of this song is about a man that is regretful when the love of his life breaks up with him.
“Counting Stars” is a song written by One Republic that has a list full of symbolism and another story of regret. The song can be defined in so many ways; it just depends on how you look at it. Sometimes the way to our dreams can be absolutely impossible. There are tough obstacles that stand in our way, and sometimes you feel you can’t reach what you’re looking for. Getting lost along the journey can be rough. At points in your journey throughout life, you’re going to feel regret. “Counting Stars” is describing how an addiction can get the best you. “Lately I been, I been losing sleep/ dreaming about the things that we could be,” is a verse in the chorus that shows you that regret isn’t always a terrible thing. Instead of dwelling on his mistakes, he dreams about what he could be and can achieve. “I couldn’t lie, couldn’t lie, couldn’t lie/ everything that drowns me makes me wanna fly,” is the verse that hints that his regret is about an addiction. The writer knows what’s wrong for him, but the things that drown him and bring him down, are the things that make him fly. “Make that money/ watch it burn,” is symbolizing that society sets us up to get a job and teaches us that money is everything, but if you’ve lost focus on how to spend money, it can feel like you are just watching it burn. “No more counting dollars/ we’ll be counting stars,” is saying that instead of relying on money to lead their journey, they’re going to be counting stars which means counting blessings and the stars are a symbolic meaning of joy.
The song “Watching Airplanes” by Gary Allan is about a man whose girlfriend left him, and didn’t want to be with him anymore. The girl is on an airplane taking flight out of his town, and he doesn’t want her to go. He sits near the runway, and is trying to figure out what is going on. This song shows Gary Allan’s regret in his decision and includes a lot of imagery. A verse in this song that proves this is, “Sittin out here on the hood of this truck looking up/ at a caramel colored sunset sky.” What he is saying here is he’s on his truck near the runway and he’s staring at the sky, wondering why she’s doing this to him. This verse is packed full of imagery because we were able to picture the sky being different colors and see planes going off into the colored sky. Another lyric with clear imagery is, “I wonder what you’d do/ if you looked out your window/ saw me runnin down the runway/ just like I was crazy/ that fence is too high so am I.” He is saying that he wants to stop her from going, but he knows he can’t. We could actually see a man running down a runway trying to stop a plane.
Music is beautiful.
Lyrics can be so powerful that it can bring people together, and can also bring out the good and the bad emotions that are within us. Another song we have chosen is " I Hate Everything About You" by Three Days Grace. We picked this song because we wanted to share the true meaning of it. “I Hate Everything About You” starts off with, "Every time we lie awake/ After every hit we take/ Every feeling that I get/ But I haven't missed you yet/ Every roommate kept awake/ By every sigh and scream we make/ All the feelings that I get/ But I still don't miss you yet." Next, the lyrics state, "Only when I stop to think about it/ I hate everything about you/ Why do I love you?/ I hate everything about you/ Why do I love you?" In the beginning of this song, he talks about how much they fight. This person he is talking about in this song brings out the worst in him, and it seems he is violent and angry. We believe this song was about being in a relationship with someone, but it turned toxic because of betrayal and lies. Next, he claims that he hates everything about this person. He is so angry at this person that he thinks he hates them... but in reality, he is actually in love with her. Not only is this song about regret, but it also shows a lot of irony. I think that this song is very ironic because he means to hate her and wants to hate her so badly. And he keeps telling himself he hates her but when he really thinks about it, he loves this person and cannot get over them. This also goes along with regret because I believe that where there is anger, there has to be some form of regret. Even if you love someone, you can regret meeting them if they have hurt
you.
No one ever told us that life would be easy, and if it was, there would be no point. If it weren’t for the moments that challenge us, we couldn’t define ourselves. We’d like to change the past because of regrets, but this would completely change who we are. The events themselves that we regret are not to be spoken of but, the affects that occurred due to them are the focal point. “Regret is an appalling waste of energy; you can't build on it; it is only good for wallowing in” (Katherine Mansfield).
