Joshua Harris, former Covenant Life Church lead pastor, has called the main content of “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” a huge mistake. In the book, he describes traditional dating as a sort-of preparation for divorce because it trains people to walk away from relationships each time problems come up, The Christian Post explains.
“I Kissed Dating Goodbye” promotes courtship and a relationship which leads to marriage with the blessing and involvement of the couple’s parents. The book strongly speaks out against sex before marriage or similar forms of physical intimacy, saying it violates
the sacred intimacy meant for married couples.
Earlier this month, Harris told Ruth Graham of Slate that he now questioned if his biggest accomplishment in his life is actually a big mistake.
“Part of the reason this has been so hard for me is that I have so much of my identity tied up in these books. It's what I'm known for,” Harris told Graham. “It's like, well, crap, is the biggest thing I've done in my life this really huge mistake?”
Earlier this year, he also took to Twitter to apologize to some of the readers who followed the advice in “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” and ended up in an unhappy disposition years after. One of them is user Kristine Kruszelnicki who blamed Harris for causing her to “set bar too high,” and is now unmarried an infertile at 37. User Elizabeth Esther also revealed that she never went to prom as a result of the abstinence book.
“@elizabethesther my school wasn't allowed to have prom. Because @HarrisJosh lol,” user Jessica Kathryn replied.
“@jessicakathryn @elizabethesther Sorry about that, Jess,” Harris answered using his official account.
In light of the readers’ feedback regarding “I Kissed Dating Goodbye,” Joshua Harris vowed to reevaluate the advice he wrote in the book.
