Have you ever wondered how real spies operate? Well look no further than the 5th chapter, because it is full of the jobs that modern day spies have to execute, and the methods they use to get it done with. And to finish it all up, we have a deleted scene, where Cam and Josh don’t miss the movie! You will leave this book, satisfied, and knowing more about Cammie’s world in “I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have To Kill You”
Chapter 1:The Plot
A …show more content…
pivotal scene in the rising action of “I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You” is when Cammie and Josh both go to the dance, and Cammie a.) Sees her mom, and b.) Leaves the dance without informing Josh! This moment is important because as Cammie directly states, “I was stupid. STUPID. STUPID. STUPID,” (Carter, 371), as when Cammie sees her mom dancing with Joe Solomon, she knows that things could have been drastic had she been caught, furthermore, this is when Josh starts to think there is more to Cammie than meets the eye, and Cammie realizes that when she says, “ Bex, I can’t just leave him! He’ll worry, He’ll start looking and asking around and…”
This is a very important scene in the book, because this is for one thing, kind of like the first sign of a stormy sea in their relationship, Cammie realizes the risks she is taking and what she is endangering not just to her, but the people around her, and finally, Josh finally realized that there was more to Cammie that meets the eye, which when investigating, leads to him finding out the truth about the Gallagher Academy, the truth about her, and the breakup.
Chapter 2: Macey and Cammie The relationship between Cam & Macey is a very important one. They have huge differences mentally and physically. Physically, Macey is described to have a supermodel body, while Cammie has a physically fit body, Macey is known to have stunning face, while from Cammies point of view, she herself is very average, which we learn is not the case, but nevertheless this is important, because this jealousy of Macey that Cammie has, is the start of a feud that will turn into a great friendship. Mentally, Cammie seems to be a very strict person, while Macey is really laid back, as seen by her attitude.
In the beginning of the book Macey is caught smoking in the middle of the Gallagher Academy (Carter, 61), which leads to Bex and Cammies immediate dismissal/disapproval of her. Yet, as you see in chapter 16, when Cam goes to Macey with help for Josh, Macey helps. And she is the one who actually manages to get them together! Cammies opinions finally change when Macey utters those fateful words: “Junior Mints” (306), which soon ends up leading to the greatest friendship in this book series!
Chapter 3: Symbols One of the biggest symbols in this book is that things aren't always that they seem, which is symbolised by the cover. If we take a deeper look at the cover, we realize that presumably Cammie has something in her hands, it seems innocent enough, but if you take an even deeper look, you see that there is a skull and crossbones on the seemingly sticks. I choose to look at this as this is a symbol that doesn’t appear directly in the book, but hinted at otherwise.
As per example, the silver cross necklace, seemingly like the sticks, it looks innocent enough. But if one is to actually look closer, they might have seen that it was a mike from which Bex, Liz, and Macey communicate to Cammie from (Carter, 148-149) just like if you look closer at the sticks, there is a skull and crossbones on them.
I also think this symbol slowly hinted at a type of sexism, that girls are often overlooked in a lot of ways. This is known from the history of the Gallagher Academy, with Gilly herself realizing that there aren’t a lot of options for girls that are available for boys, so she started the Gallagher Academy. You might wonder how this is related to the symbol, well let me explain, the sticks seem to be an ordinary bunch of sticks, until you look closely, and realize that there are more to these sticks than you thought before.
Another example of this symbol is within Cammie herself. As in her field name, “Chameleon”. Chameleons, which thanks to their beautiful camouflage blends in, but as soon as a bug flies by, it's gone, eaten by the chameleon. Which is kind of like Cammie’s ability to “disappear” into thin air, but strike out quickly. Sometimes the best place to hide, is in plain sight.
Chapter 4: Theme: The Hidden Message
The theme of this book is that things aren’t always the things they seem. This starts off immediately in this book, with the introduction of Josh, and when Cammie keeps rattling off lies to Josh, starting with her school, all the way to her “Cat” Susie. (Carter, Chapter 7). This leads to a huge revelation in the whole novel, with Josh realizing that she goes to Gallagher academy, which eventually leads to their breakup.
This theme is furthermore expanded when Cammie is “Kidnapped” by her teachers, for the final, but that Josh doesn’t know, and he thinks it is a real kidnapping. This leads to him “rescuing” Cammie, and with him being the first “Outsider’ to enter the walls of the Gallagher Academy. This is important to life, because a lot of people aren’t who they seem to be. One famous example of this is Steve Jobs, who ripped of Steve Wozniak for millions of dollars! Early on, while still trying to stake their claim in the industry, the two were tasked with building a scaled-back version of Pong. Jobs was responsible for getting the job, but it was Wozniak worked tirelessly to build the game. Jobs took most of the credit and even lied to Wozniak about the bonus amount and instead pocketed the money! Also, the fame Jobs stole was tremendous, as he changed the focus of apple from “Change the World” to “Get the stockholders money” as Wired writer Steven Levy said.
Chapter 5: Research : Real Spies In the novel “I’d Tell You I Love You, But then I’d Have To Kill You” the topic of spies is talked about a lot.
This topic is introduced early on, as early on as the 6th page! This happens when Cammie says, “I go to a school for spies” (Carter, 6), this is an important quote because it sets the plot for the rest of the book, as spies are the cause of the main conflict in this book.
Spies usually have one of two objectives. The first objective is Espionage, espionage is the tactic that focuses on topics not available to the public, with most of the information gotten through this method is gotten through covert means. Espionage has dated all the way back to Ancient Indian times, during Chandra Gupta’s reign. In Chanakya’s Arthashastra, he describes how he used methods of assassination and espionage to gain and preserve Chandra Gupta’s reign. The U.S. itself has used espionage very heavily, especially during the Cold
War.
The second objective is counterintelligence. Counterintelligence refers to information gathered and activities conducted to protect against espionage, other intelligence activities, sabotage, or assassinations conducted for or on behalf of foreign powers, organizations or persons or international terrorist activities. There are three types of counter intelligence. Collective, Defensive, and Offensive. Collective counterintelligence: gaining information about an opponent’s intelligence collection capabilities that might be aimed at an entity. Defensive counterintelligence: thwarting efforts by hostile intelligence services to penetrate the service. Offensive counterintelligence: having identified an opponent’s efforts against the system, trying to manipulate these attacks either by “turning” the opponent’s agents into double agents or by feeding them false information they will report home.

Chapter 7: Fan Fiction : The Movie Date
Josh then said, “ Let’s go quickly! The movie starts at six, otherwise we’re gonna be late!” His wavy hair waving in the wind. He then grabbed my hand suddenly and started walking, it took all of my skills to stop myself from throwing him into the ground. We walked into the movie theater, the smell of butter hitting me like a truck, so this is what it feels like to be normal I thought to myself, smiling. My eyes caught glimpse of an obnoxious group of girls, dressed in bright pinks and yellows, They are so obnoxious! I thought. Then the girl with the pink short shorts turned around, it was Macey! That must mean the other girls are Liz, and Bex!!! God Bless their sweet souls!
Here comes the worst part. You wouldn’t believe who walked through the doors next. Dee Dee! With the D-man Dillon! Dee Dee walked over, and asked us which tickets we had with her obnoxiously high voice, and her bright clothing blinding my eyes, and WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT, THEY HAD SEATS RIGHT NEXT TO US! Coincidence? I think not. I got in the line, and put my arm through Josh’s so Dee Dee couldn’t steal him using her bright pink lipstick, and got myself some junior mints. We walked into theater 13, (I know, the greatest number), and sat down next to him in the back row. I didn’t really pay attention to the movie, I kept watching Josh. He did this cute yawn thing, and ended up with his arm around my shoulders. I leaned in and took a deep breath, he smelled of clean Downy and deodorant. I looked up at him and gazed into his ocean blue eyes, and his dirty blond hair looking amazing. He looks down at me, and we both move to each other. Our lips meet, and time stops, he tastes of cinnamon, i’m consumed by it, but I can already feel the grandma next to me giving odd stares, and Bex and Liz freaking out in the mike. I lean in closer throughout the movie, and we finish the rest of the movie in silence. I do notice Dee Dee shooting, what is it, Longful glances at me? I’ll have to ask Macey about it later.
