“ANY GIVEN SUNDAY” - COMMUNICATION
1. Movie Summary / Synopsis
American Football is a popular team sportin the United States. With roots beginning in 1869, the full contact sport has become known as a defining feature of American culture. Players are regularly hit by opposing teams with a huge amount of force and this poses huge risk of serious injuries such as concussions. Professional athletes in the sport are regarded as the definition of an “alpha-male” in American society and have become the aspirations for their fans. It is against this backdrop that the sport has also been seen as having a warrior culture where the sport is treated like a war. Athletes march onto a field not to play a game, but go into the field as fighters that needs to win a battle.

It is proven how body movements, intonations, emphasis given to the words and facial expressions can act as powerful tools in communication which at the end motivates the team members. He repeated the key word in the speech – “inch” – not once, but 13 times as he knew that repetition is a powerful tool in delivering the message.He speaks with genuine emotion and maintains great eye contact with the team members. Tony uses contrasts to create powerful effect to the speech delivered: “hell and the light; winning and losing; living and dying”. He uses simple words as what really matters is the team understanding of the message delivered. He ends his speech with a call to action: “What are you gonna do?” Tony’s speech covered all the three key elements of motivations i.e. intensity, direction and persistence.
